Hey everyone! I havnt been on One-Ring all summer but I am getting back now, wich is good as I could use some advice.
I'm building a game board wich will be a moria board or some other dwarven hold and will include Polystyrene cave walls.
what I need to know is what type of paint to use on the polystyrene as I dont want to put hours into modelling it just to have it shrivel up when I apply paint.

To make a photocopier, simply photocopier a mirror.

Acrylic paint, applied with a brush or roller is fine for polystyrene. Don't use a spray can because the propellant is a solvent, and some of the thinners used in enamel paints will dissolve plastic too.

I use cheapo acrylic paints straight onto styrofoam and it works just fine.

I see that you are in Alberta, as am I (Red Deer), so my advice will be relevant as far as brands etc.

For all my terrain projects, I go to Home Depot and do one of two things:

1. buy a small tin of Painter's Touch by Rustoleum, in Flat Black. Makes a perfect undercoat for whatever I am doing. I have had the same small tin for years.

2. go to Home Depot late on a Friday or early on a Saturday. They will have an orange flat cart with all the mis-tints from the week. You can usually find various greys or browns, and they are around $15 for a whole gallon of the stuff. Small tins too, usually around $8. Watch you get a latex interior paint, and not like a deck stain. This is always a winning venture.

Of course, you can take any colour down to a real paint shop like a Benjamin Moore and get them to custom tint a whole paint can. Any colour you want, they can tint it.

Of course, the other thing you can do is make up a mix of PVA glue and water, (3:1 ratio) and apply this to the polystyrene. It will seal it, and it is then safe to prime it with an aerosol.


Just make sure you cover it all.

You can add a few drops of paint (green or brown) to that mix so that the PVA coat stands out and you dont miss any spots.

Wow Thanks all! I think Ill probobly just use some acrylic paint, I will probably try to find out if homehardware sells mis-tints as there is no home depot were I live, but thanks for the great advice!
