I personally haven't worked with thatch yet, but two of the articles here on OR are very helpful. Both Mac's Bywater Mill and Bart's Buckland Brewery should help you a lot. Here are the links to those two articles,

i made the golden hall at edoras from the bgime magazine and used a piece of synthetic fur and covered it in watered down pva brushing upwards sticking the fur up and then brushing down the fur so it was flat. it took ages to dry but once it had i drybrushed it snakebite leather, bubonic brown and then bleached bone and it has turned out pretty nice. hope this helps

Yup same method used here, fake fur..I found some that was a nice straw colour, so it didn't take much work to get the look I wanted.
I cut the fur into long strips and laid it along the roof,that helps with the look.



Now you see why most of my bases are painted in that green.

I only ever tried Alans thatching technic with the jute rope (the one you can see in the Bywater Mill article that Leaf mention it above) and I must say I like the results, but its very time consuming and one of the most boring tasks I ever did. A good alternative, if not a better one, is plumbers stuff.

Has anybody ever tried using packing styrofoam as a thatching material? I read an article by one fellow claiming it worked great, with a realistic texture, as opposed to looking like wet fur...

I have seen a few renditions of thatch and the jute rope is far and away the best looking, if tedious to create. As for the fake fur, some do look as it the building has just emerged from a deluge; some delicate drybrushing would help there, methinks...

Speaking of deluges.... it is absolutely bucketing down outside... typical November in Derry
