@Dwarf Lord of Ered Luin: There is some texture sculpted into the miniature, but I painted them to emphasize the effect and and to make it look like rotted flesh stretched over bones.

I wish I would have thought to base them more thematically, especially with the WotR movement trays as a palette, but alas, what can be done about it at this point?

Looks great my friend. I totally agree with you on the washes. I absolutely love how they can tranform a model sometimes!!

Nice work. I haven't been able to get myself to do into that much detail on even my dwarves. The washes really help though unfortunately there are a lot of "matt" varnishes that turn out shiny. What do you use and how shiny is it?

Thanks!

I do two layers of varnish. The first layer is Krylon Triple-thick Crystal Clear Glaze (0500). This is the main protection for my paint job, as all of my miniatures are gaming pieces. I really despise chipped paint. The next layer is Krylon Matte Finish (1311), which knocks off the shine. There is a slight sheen, but it's not bad. It's on the model in most of the pictures I post.

I use 'Anti-Shine Matt Varnish - CP3003' (see http://www.thearmypainter.com/product_presentation.php?page=1&ProductgroupId=2)...

Thanks!

I made a little progress tonight. I put sand/ballast on 7 of the WotR infantry bases, and on 11 of the cavalry bases. They are currently drying in the garage after a good undercoat. These shouldn't take too long to finish....It's just a bunch of drybrushing after all.

So, I found out my store is running a War of the Ring tournament tomorrow, so I thought I'd try out some of my Angmar stuff. Here is the list I put together:

Gûlavhar, the Terror of Arnor (Legendary) -- 200

Angmar Orc Warband (Common) -- 300
--5x Companies with Shields
--Captain, Banner, Shaman

Ghostly Legion (Common) -- 325
--4x Companies
--Captain, Banner

Allied Warg Pack (Common) -- 170
--6x Companies
--Chieftain

Total -- 1,000 Points

I'll let you guys know how I fare.

Hey, once again.

The tournament was a lot of fun, although I had to leave early, and therefore ended up in last place. I was able to play in two rounds.

Game 1 -- vs. Fallen Realms
His list:
--2 Mûmaks
--The Shadow Lord
--Mordor Troll Chieftain
--3x Company Formation of Haradrim Archers
--1x Company of Easterlings with Shields
--1x Company Easterlings with Shields

Game Result -- Loss.

The objective was to grab a ruined building in the center of the board. Gûlavhar and my Ghostly Legion managed to slaughter one of the Mûmakil in one turn of combat, but the other wreaked havoc on my block of Orcs. Gûlavhar then died duelling with the Troll, but was avenged by the Ghosts. He won the game soundly by parking his archers in the ruin, and I couldn't dislodge them AND avoid the other Mûmak, so I eventually got trampled. It was a lot of fun.

Game 2 -- vs. Dwarves
His list:
--Gimli
--King's Champion
--Drár's Hunters (2x Companies)
--1x Company of some ambushing Dwarf Rangers
--3x Company Formation of Dwarves with Shields
--2x Company Formation of Dwarves with Bows
--1x Company Formation of Dwarves with Bows
--3x Company Formation of Khazâd Guard

Result -- Loss.

The objective was to grab 3 of 5 objectives on the table. I very nearly wiped his Khazâd Guard and Gimli off the board on the first turn, with Gûlavhar and my Wargs in the flank of his unit. However, he countered my Heroic Charge with one of his own, and stole all of my momentum. I was on the back foot for the rest of the game. I came close to pulling it off a couple of times, but twice I was held back by failing to cause ONE MORE CASUALTY. But, such were the dice, and when Drár's Hunter's popped out, that sealed my fate.

I had a lot of fun at the tournament. I met some new opponents, and ended up with the Best Sportsman award. (Only five showed up, after a couple of people canceled on us.) Anyway, I had a blast, and it really motivated me to keep on painting my army!

Okay, so last night I had a bout of insomnia and I managed to get most of my WotR movement trays finished. Since, movement trays on their own are boring, I took the chance to set up most of my army for some decent shots. It's not everything, as I didn't feel like braving the snow to get the rest, but it's the majority of them. Without further ado:
Movement Trays

Army Shot
Image
Wild Wargs & Chieftain
Image
Spectres (I need to paint up those two Goblins to complete the tray)
Image
Orc Archers
Image
Court of the Fallen King
Image
Rather than buying another four Barrow-wights, I made these cork standing stones (inspired by a John Howe illustration). They'll do the same job, and fit with the theme.
Image
Orc Warband...Still needs to be expanded
Image
Ghostly Legion...needs to be expanded and I still need to trade for a King of the Dead (hint, hint). The empty cavalry trays are for my Riders of the Dead, which will be converted from Riders of Rohan.

Might I just say that the idea of using rocks to take up space in the Court of Fallen Kings is GENIUS!!! Great work! Which issue of WD is that in the background?

Great to see pics of your army Erunion! 8) Nice movement trays.

I also like the idea of using rocks to fill in spaces in companies, very clever! :yay: And I can't wait to see how you piant your Warriors + Riders of the Dead.

Alrighty then...It has been quite a while since I have been able to get any work done on my Angmar army. In fact, I hadn't been able to do ANY hobby-related stuff for a while as we moved from Virginia to Kentucky, and since then I've been working far too many hours. Such is the life of a minister! That said, I was finally able to finish my Court of Fallen Kings. All they need is some varnish (which I'll need to pick up) and they are game-ready. I know they're not the fanciest painted models, but I'm really just trying for tabletop quality.

Image

The next thing I paint will be some trolls for the February Painting Challenge, including Buhrdur and one of his cave troll buddies.

Also, I have abandoned my personal hobby blog and instead I will be working on a collaborative blog with three of my gaming buddies. We just started this, so there aren't many posts yet, but I hope that with four of us going, it will help us all stay motivated and keep the blog a little more lively. The link is in my sig.

Cheers!

:yay: Glad to see your back and doing hobby stuff. The cork rocks look great, and the idea is a good one as well. Just noticed, is the back left one missing his left arm?

Thanks! Yeah, I lost the other arm a long, long time ago but I figured it wouldn't hurt to just fill the hole with green stuff. He is, after all, a re-animated corpse.
