I'm not sure, but I think it's 6'x4'

Depends on how big the games are and what is available at that time.

Most of the older Strategy Battle Game scenarios called for a 4ftx4ft table. Later scenarios called for a 8ftx4ft table.

The standard Warhammer table is 6ftx4ft.

The basic Realm of Battle set creates a 6ftx4ft table, but you can also make a 4ftx4ft space with it. Or, indeed, a 2ftx2ft space - The Fall of the Necromancer calls for really small battle spaces like that.

Our LGS has a few 4x8 tables so most of our LotR games are played on 4x4 or 4x8.

Generally 4x4 works great for SBG for most games. If we had a big SBG match going we might make a table 4x6. The only times we've used the whole 4x8 for SBG has been for very large games and/or lots of cavalry and archers on each side.

For WotR we're generally fine 4x4 for games up to about 750 points. Starting at 1000 points this size may start getting cluttered and armies clash too fast (cavalry and archers don't really play out as well). I'd say 4x6 or 4x8 is great for WotR above 1000 and probably required over 1500 points.
