I helped organise a wargaming convention recently and the average age of the committee members would be about 55. I was the youngest there at 47.

There were a few folks at the convention who were in their 70's, while the youngest actual player there would be about 8 or 9 (and she won 4 out of the 6 games she played - yes, 'she').

It's a hobby for all ages.

It sure is, there isn't anyone who says that you have to be of certain age.
Especially not GW, as long as they get the money ;)

Well in my opinion age doesn't matter and i wouldn't call it "playing with toy soldiers" rather advanced chess. Well however like mentioned before there are so many less useful hobbies then this one and in my opinion its better then sitting infront of the tv/pc and watching/playing any [word deleted] like football (my opinion),big brother [...] or one of those mindless roleplay-games.

It's interesting how all of the ages are all over the board. I'm 14 myself. And no - you aren't too old! So long as you like painting little figures and a good game over a couple hours, you'll enjoy wargaming.

Late to the party on reply here, but I turned 40 this past March. I've been playing wargames of various sorts since I was 15, and RPG since 13.

Most of our LotR / WotR players are within a few years of me in either direction but we have a couple teenagers (including children of some of our adult players).

Guys,

Just wondering about this.

I am an old gamer at 49 (almost 50)

Am I too old to be playing with miniatures and toy soldiers! ??

Should I seek advice from my psychiastrist?

Hmm, I forgot, he's the president of our club!

Really though, how old are we all ? As mentioned, I am well into my 40s

Cheers,

Arthur :)

Arthur,

Thank you for starting this thread; I'm really enjoying it - for a couple of reasons...

I'm 45 (How the heck did that happen?) and I often ask myself the same question. Is it ridiculous for a guy my age to be playing with little toy soldiers? Sometimes it feels like a secret shame - when I reflect on my how my corporate colleagues spend their free time.

On the other hand, I truly enjoy it and that's just who I am. I tried golf (time consuming AND frustrating) and I'm not into cars or motorcycles or ski boats. I have small kids, which means I no long can spend long weekends away camping or with historical reenactments (dress up for adults!) and so this hobby fits my stay-at-home lifestyle at the moment.

I'm lucky in that I have a world-class LGS in my area with a big circle of adult gamers, some older than me, with a diverse array of gaming interests.

The other thing I'm liking in this thread is the number of younger teenagers speaking up. I got into this hobby stuff at 13 and worked (off the books) at an LGS in the late 70's watching the register and painting miniatures, for which I had some ability. Ironically, the first models I painted on commission were the old Heritage-LotR figs from the Ralph Bakshi LotR movie. (shudder) And though I wandered away from all things gaming through my college (chicks and beer) and early professional years (climb the corporate ladder), I came back to it 9 years ago through an old school mate who never left it. He asked me to paint some of his WFB figs and the long dormant embers caught fire.

If some had told me at 14 I'd be doing this at 45...

I just got here today and what do I see? I thread about old people. Makes me feel good. I'm 49. Started gaming in 1976. Started tournament gaming in 1988 with WRG 6th. I'm tired of GW fantasy & 40k. Just found WoTR and love the rules.

I ordered my first war game army from the back of a comic book in 1962.
Last time I heard the one that dies with the most toys wins. :P

I am 36 myself but still have fond memories of using those green army men from the back of comics for my wargaming minis. (never did find a use for those damned mine detectors but the prone rifleman were sweet!)

Though I admit I am in no hurry to 'win'... ;)
