I have noticed that several varnishes have a drying time of around 6 hours between coats, as with the current one I'm using.
However they seem to be dry within 30 mins. No sign of tackiness and my hand can run smoothly over it.

So why wait the 6 hours ?

I'm presuming there is some reason I don't know, but I was curious as to what difference the wait is supposed to make and in a nutshell, is it really worth waiting that long ?

i had one that said to wait about six hours - it was quite correct. But i got new one who doesn't take that long to wait as it's says - about an hour - half an hour - and that's correct to .
So for me the times they say are quite correct so far .

Id always leave Games Workshop varnsh a couple of hours but i now airbrush my varnish coat on as it means i can do 20 or so at a time and it takes me only a few mins and the varnish is dry in about 10 mins if i dont get it on to thick.

Also i find temperature makes a big difference. The warmer the day the quicker it drys, with an airbrush that can be bad. Ive had times when its been dry before its even hit the model.

I use Army Painter matt varnish spray and it sometimes only takes 10-15 minutes to dry. The added bonus being that several minis can be sprayed at once, cutting down on finishing time. It also keeps the flock grass on the bases for longer.

I tend to varnish my models and then base them.

The question I was asking was not how long the drying time is, but why some say wait 6 hours when they appear dry in 20 mins ?
Is there something else happening I am not aware of ?

Dying time varies massively depending on atmosferic temperature. Im guesssing 6 hours would be the longest it would take if it rwas like -10 or something extreme.

Also any paint qwill always be touch dry reasonably faster than te manufacturer says but it wont have bonded to the model so well do it will rub off easier.
