Nice work! How long did it take to make a tray? And how many did you make?

A neat idea. I wonder if simply gluing the metal sheet to the bottom of GW WotR trays would be simpler - no cutting and so on involved, but then too, the trays are still as low set ... a bit of the old swings and roundabouts, folks. 10/10 for innovation. :yay:

We still are in the process of making them, but right now, we have around 50 done. The first batch of material should produce around an hundred.

I would say it took about 10-15 hours to do them, spaced through a week or two. That does include creating the template and setting up the workspace table and new press-drill. So I don't have an individual time. However, the last batch made was quite quick.

That might work, depending of the strength of your magnet. It might work for plastic but not metal models too, depending on the weight. Haven't tried it though. A small and optional part of the goal was to have them cheaper then the GW ones, so just adding stuff to the official one would have gone against that, as well as the other goals. :)

It's more effort than I would be willing to put in, but bravo! They're lovely trays and much more functional than the GW ones. Great write up.

OK, if youare only making a few, but to make 40+ of them would be a nightmare and expensive. Do you really have that much problem with models falling over in them? Some of my friends even use the GW bases as a means to transprt models and if you do have problems a bit of blue-tac on the models base will be cheaper, easier and quicker than making a ton of movement tray's.

It depends on your own experience. I really dislike playing with the GW one. At each move of a unit, some models fell off. And just pushing the tray on the table, like we do in Fantasy, doesn't work because they stack on the one in the front, etc.

For the price, it's the contrary of what you said. They are really cheaper then GW's one, but only if you make a lot of them, as you can buy the material at bigger scale. For example, a 8'x4' sheet of hardboard is quite cheaper then eight 2'x2'. To give you an idea, the base we made costed about a fifth of the GW One. Even when you add the cost of the magnets, it's still less then a fourth.

We worked in team, each person working on the next step, only stopping because of drying time. It really went well. I don't regret doing it at all.

I've a tip for drilling the holes for you. Instead of keeping the drill nice and verticle, have it at a slight slant and rotate during drilling, this will incease the hole size just enought to accomodate the 25mm base. Get it right and the models will pretty much snap into place doing away with the need for magnets.

Hello there... very nicely done article, easy to follow, and good pics.

I asked about exactly this back in January. Now that I have begun playing SBG I am getting the itch to play WotR and these plans will save me a good deal of time. Thank you so much.

Here's my original post about the idea...
