Whafrog that's true but if you are fighting behind the sword then you have no use of your shield and if you sent your spearmen to the front with shields there is no one to support them.

This probably belongs in tactics, but...it's a simple cost question: if you can't use your elf blade because you took a shield, then you might as well replace the blade with a spear. Same cost, no change in functionality, except now you have the tactical option of supporting another model if chance dictates.

The box set doesn't really reflect the optimal equipment allocation, you get way more blades than you need.

Back to painting...I've found I need to spend summers building (open house, get out the glue smell), so I look forward to painting my recently built Galadhrim in the fall.

I usually do a light drybrush of codex grey. Some people don't like drybrushing because it looks "dusty", but I often prefer it, not to mention it's really easy. Alternately, just highlight normally with codex grey. Your minis are dark like mine, so I wouldn't go lighter than that.

You can barely make out the grey on the twin model in my gallery.

Brilliant, Noddwyr! Amazing detail and smooth shading. It's rare that someone can get the eyes just right.

Like whafrog said, the eyes are brilliant! 8)

Have you done the eyes like that over an entire army?

Thanks for the comments guys. Well I plan to have this army to a very high standard, but to be honest, he is the first of my wood elves to have been painted and was a paint scheme test, which I think turned out pretty well.
Hopefully I can get my whole army to look like that. It would be pretty neat, but I still have a lot of converting to do to most of the models before I manage to paint them all up.

hero of gondor, i wanted the new color scheme of the red and metal to be new so they could be the like allies of fingolfin's elves. If GW comes out with some new boxed sets of high elves, i will turn those into the red and metal scheme i showed you. That's why i used that color scheme.

I love the Elrond; he looks very sort of epic and First Age-ish.

Feanorthenoldor, really like the color scheme. Muted or not, thematic or not, GW or not...it works. Then when you high-lighted the cloth, it really made them pop! Great work. I hope you don't mind if I take your technique and apply it to my growing elf/dwarf army.

I need to know though, after washing the metals with the Black did you go back and touch up some of the areas w/the base color or did you leave it be? The blue highlight: did you use (gw reference) regal, badab wash, regal, enchanted then lightning or then slash of white?

Also, there was one wiggly pike (back row, far left...or right as you look at it). ;)

thanks for the nice words, haven't seen a post in this thread in a while, will try my best to post new pics of my army..

anyway, ScarpeIron, after the wash, I didn't do anything.
For the blue highlight, yes, i did basecoat regal blue, wash badab black, but then because I didn't have an enchanted blue I did a 3-1 regal blue and skull white mix, that's it, it's probably enchanted blue, but pretty much, that's it!!

oh and I give you permission to use the color scheme on your armies, lol.

Oh and to all the people who contribute to this thread, sorry I haven't posted lately been really really busy.

anyway bye bye

Your Noldor look really fantastic, Feanor; the silver and blue really evokes images of the bleak mountains, cold plains, and bitter snows of Hithlum and Mithrim.
However, I would advise giving them black hair rather than white, as the Noldor are explicitly stated to have dark hair.
But a really nice job; very clean and, despite the simplicity of the method, very effective.

As for the red colour scheme - the colour itself is perfect to represent the sons of Feanor, since that was, in fact, the colour of their heraldry (if I recall correctly).
The painting itself, though...the simplicity that enhanced the rank-and-file warriors, in my opinion, serves only to hamper the Elrond model. While it looks like you have some good basecoats down, a few highlights on the armour, skin, and cloth (especially the latter two) might prove helpful.

Great work on the armour, some good use of shading and highlights
