Uruks are winning (gasps of surprise).

Uruk Warrior-3
Morannon Orc-3
Dwarf Warrior-2
Wose Warrior-1
Haradrim Archer-1

as much as i want to vote an elf warrior of some sort, they are either lots of points, have a rubbish defence, or both, so im voting morannon orc.

In my opinion, hobbits are seriously overrated. Yes, they only cost four points but that's because they're so bad. They're going to need 6's to wound everyone, while everyone else will need only 4's to wound them. They can't outmanuever their opponent, and because of that you can't exploit their only advantage, numbers. Compare a Goblin to a Hobbit and you'll see what I mean...

100% agreed. They're fun, but in a competitve game they're as bad as it gets. I can see why a small group of archers could be useful, but as an army they completely suck, no matter how many there are. As has been said, they cannot use numbers since they get outmanouvered, and can't have spears, which IMO is a must for a rank and file warrior. Dwarves kind of make up for this with their defence, but hobbits don't have a single decent stat. They aren't even able to wound some things. Goblins or (i think) haradrim warriors are worth the extra point a million times over.

on a positive side though its fun killing them.

I expect they're also fun to paint. If they could ally I might use them with another army for fun, but not competitively.

With an 18in shoot range? You're probably only going to get one or two rounds of shooting before they're killed.

Following fact might surprise you: 2007 and 2008 UKGTs (the 3rd [122] and 1st [145] biggest LotR tournaments in history - 2nd biggest was actually the 2009 Polish National Team Championships with 136 players but that's irrelevant) were won by Hobbit armies. Although after SL appeared, they're not as good anymore (and yet they were 6th at the 09 GT ;) ).

General Elessar wrote:

Compare the fact that Hobbits in 700 points get Gandalf, 12 Dunedain with Spears and 62 little men, for a total of 32 long range and another 40 short range shots and still keep model limit while Goblins... don't?
You can't objectively compare two single units without looking at the armies they come from and the possibilities they have.

I'm surprised Wood Elf warrior is not on that list (considering that 7 out of the top 10 list at 2010 GT were Wood Elves and there were only 2 Isengard armies - neither heavy on shielded Uruks, rather Orc/xbow/Saruman lists, the Uruk should be swapped for an Elf on the top of that list IMHO). Also, Woses are some of the most overpowered models in the game if the player playing them knows what he's doing.

+1 to Wose from me.

Sorry for a very statistical post, but facts don't lie ;)

I played at those GTs and know the winners of every UKGT since 2006 personally (as well as I won the doubles GT in 2009 and finished 2nd in Singles GT 2010 and 2nd in Doubles 2010 - ie. I've got some 5 years of highly competitive LotR experience).

About the actual links - I've been documenting some GT facts and lots of past armylists since 2008 when I started writing reports for the leading Polish LotR site, here's a link with pictures and armylists of the 2008 GT:
http://www.mitril.pl/relacje-turnieje/i ... sciom.html
On the bottom of that (below the picture of the final standings) there are lists of the winner of that GT - Hobbits for Good and Moria with 5 Spider Queens for evil. 2009 GT was won by Outrider/Gamling/Saruman and Mordor Army, which I have a link to too in case anyone's interested.

Considering this year's GT, you might find the following TLA post quite interesting and educating in terms of competitive play (it contains lists of almost all TLA members from 2010GT):
http://www.terrainguild.com/thelastalli ... =18&t=2360

I hope that helps :)

But this thread is "Most competitive base troop", not most competitive army. So, you should compare "two single units".

Prowlers :) These guys have NEVER let me down, i only have 4, but they almost always pay off and and help out in every situation

so +1 prowlers

(im also a big fan of the morranons, but i do see woses and uruks being up top as well)

and an honorable mention to wargs, for str 4 and 20cm movement for just 8pts (someone check the move, i cant find my book)

someone get the new ratings up, cause last one i see it only 1 for morranons, but someone said they were at 3... so im confused (and not gonna try posting it cause i dont want to look stupid :P)

I think it's 24cm/10in.

I have some more nominees: Knights of Dol Amroth, Warriors of Arnor, Mahud Warriors, and Goblin Warriors.
