Can the 'main contingent' of an alliance be just one hero? Specifically: a Rivendale 'main contingent' of only Erestor, allied with Grey Company (only Halbarad with the Banner of Awen Evenstar), and also allied with lots of Warriors of Arnor.

Yes. You need a minimum of one Hero per army list. You example doesn't actually work though, as the Grey Company can't ally with Arnor.

But Rivendale can ally with both Grey Company and Arnor... So if the 'main contingent' is Rivendale, is it then legal? Or do all alliances have to be able to ally with all other alliances? This is the heart of my question.

@frits: A contingent has to be able to ally with another contingent in order to form an alliance. So with the example you've use, that is an illegal alliance as Arnor has to be able to ally with GC to form an alliance. Both contingents aren't on friendly terms, thus they cannot be taken as a single alliance.

so...even though Rivendel can ally with both Arnor & GC, ALL alliances have to be able to ally with each other in SBG, no matter the designated 'main contingent'... Is that rule or interpretation? Sorry to keep asking; just want to be sure. Thanks.

Correct: all contigents must be able to ally with all other contigents.
