UKFB you're a sculptur right and you have cast metal models of your sculpts? Would it be possible if you can write an article on casting your own metal models please? I'm curious to how you do it and plus I may want to try my hand at this in the far distant future someday.

I already have!

I must say regarding the jewels, I painted them last and have mixed feelings. It looked ok before, but now the bright colors distract from what was quite a muted paint scheme. I think by adding color to the base it will tie it all together better.

Sorry to get your hopes up Bart!

Great looking minis, Dave! I am constantly impressed with your work.

I do have a question for you, though. When you said that you had to sculpt the Dark Marshal's arm, did you just sculpt the entire arm from greenstuff, or did you use some sort of wire armature? The reason that I ask is that I have an old Gandalf on Shadowfax that I picked up years ago in a lot on eBay, but he is missing his right arm and staff. I am not the best sculptor but I thought this might be a good way to stretch myself but I just don't know where to start.

Great work Dave
As for the base it does need something but not foliage. I'm thinking about some skeletons or bones in amongst the jewels. Dragons live in festering caves so barring a bit of moss I don't envisage much growing.

Yes it was a piece of wire to begin with. I flattened one end which became the basis for the sword and the other end was inserted into a hole I drilled into the shoulder socket. For Gandalf you will need two pieces of wire in a 'y' shape.

Yeh good idea with the skeletons. I think I will use that.

I wish I'd seen that sooner. It would have saved a lot of time!
Anyhow, the base is now littered with coins and gems, which I think enhances the overall appearance despite being a very busy base. The jewels on the dragon belly do not look so out of place now.

And here is a final pic of before and after.

Next on the list are a couple of Ents before work starts on the Cave Trolls next month.

It looks much better. I would have used the quick method and it would not have turned out as well.

The dragon has improved a lot. :yay:
I really like the way you changed the head and wings.
Personally I would prefer a more natural base with a bit of vegetation, but this base is made very well.
Maybe the skelleton is a bit over the top and the gems in his belly could be toned down a bit but that's just me.

Looking forward to the ents.

Looks fantastic! Just as good as gamesworkshops, or better! I would certainly pay for a model like that. Looking forward to your ents.

That looks a lot better now that the base is packed with other treasures and the gems in the chest look better next to the other treasure. Great looking dragon in all, very unique.

While I personally don't like the busyness of the base, nor all the 'fantasy' like add ons, it fits very well with the dragon and makes the jewels in it's belly look more natural. :yay:

Now it looks like a dragon! I like the "busy" base, wouldn't change a thing.

Nice!!!!!!! :-D
I'm glad that you took my suggestion. :D
Its great the way you used bits and pieces fom the Mines of Moria set as well. I did a similar thing with my GW dragon miniature :)
All in all, awesome.

Thanks for all the kind comments about the dragon. Now onto the next minis! Well I have to say after checking the Newline Imagery, I believe GW finally got an Ent right. The Beech isn't far off the mark at all. All I had to do to the plastic mini was drop the shoulders about 5mm, lengthen the fingers a little and add whiskers and a creeping vine. This is the first time I've compared pictures so I think I may need to add a few extra branches. I notice it has also been sculpted with the mouth open rather than shut, but I can live with that. I like it. It's one less Ent for me to sculpt for the Entmoot.

ImageImage

The photo isn't the best as it is night time here now. The model looks very white here when it is actually rather grey. I will try and take a daylight pic on Monday. I should also finish painting another Ent by then. A reposing of my Linden variety.

Excellent work on the ent and the dragon - I have one of the latter resting on a shelf awaiting modifications and I shall be using this thread as an inspiration.

And I might even buy a GW plastic ent or two - I watched the EE DVD's via a blu-ray player which upscales them on to a full HD LED TV andwas pleasantly surprised at how much the better screen and sharper image helps spot things. There are a few candidate ents, marcing to war!

Barooom!

Yeh, I'm really looking forward to the day they release the EE's on Blu-ray.
