is this the first time youve sculpted a dragon or lizard type creature ?

Yes it is, and I don't mind saying I'm struggling with it because its a cute animated creature. I think I would find it easier if I was going for a more realistic dragon (if you know what I mean). The look I was going for is like a dog anticipating the throwing of a stick.

I gave the model a skin of GS. This will be the base from which I can add torso bulk and correct the shape of the legs.

I also began work on the wing armatures. First up I did a template on card.

Image

Then this was used to cut out the wire mesh which would form the wing membrane.

Image

Aluminium and copper fingerbones were then attached which will all be puttied over.

Image

Then a test fitting.

Image

Once I've puttied the wing bones, the armature will be a little more robust and I will be able to bend it how I want to.
Next up will be to do the legs and toes, whilst seperately skinning the wings.

I think once the wings are on it will start looking a lot more like a dragon. The initial pose was close to what lots of lizard pictures are, and without the wings dragons are really just giant lizards anyway, so I can see where some people are coming from. :)

I wouldn't blame you with it being so cute, your doing a great job though considering its your first go at a dragon and the commission has its creative restraints. I'm sure anyway the next one you do wont be as strenuous, you'll be able to do what you want 8)

So I've done some work on the feet, though some of those scales need redefining.

Image

The wings also have some support since I added rough finger bones. I will skin over the mesh later today.

Image

I also started on the mid fin. Again I opted for mesh as a support.

Image

Then I did a quick skin over the top. This will need more attention once the putty cures.

Image

Those interested in the mesh I am using will find this product placement useful.

Image

Just trying to get everything together. Today I need to skin the wings, and add the tail fin. Tomorrow will be assembly and back spines followed by general corrections. Thursday will be painting, ready for collection on Friday. Well thats the plan anyway :)

Unfortunately time was so short on this that I was unable to update yesterday. I'm pleased to say I have managed to get it finished on time although having said that I'm not completely happy with some of the edge work on it. Another week and I could have sorted that out and tidied everything up. Still, all we can do is decide what to do with the time that is given us, I suppose.

This looks great! I have not seen the movie, but my sister who has said you got the expression perfect. So I congratulate you. I can definitely tell it's a cartoon dragon, and I don't really like the design, but it's close to the movie and that's what counts. :yay:

The Client picked it up earlier and was so delighted she gave me a £10 bonus on top of what I asked for so I must have done something right. 8)

Cheers for the thumbs up. 8) I agree there are some pleasantly surprising gems hidden amongst the various threads on this site. It's nice to peruse them all now and then when the time is available.
