Almost a year ago I got a blister of giant spiders to complement by goblin army. This is the first of the two. The colour scheme for this one is based upon this picture. I'm quite happy with how it's turned out so far though I'm not quite sure about to do next. There's going to be a lot of black on the model which I was planning to just paint with choas black but I'm thinking of possibly painting it with adeptus battle grey and then adding washes of black so that it doesn't look too flat. There is quite a bit of detail sculpted on the back of the spider though I don't think the yellow patches would look good with all the holes in it. Should I add the yellow in thick layers to give it some smoothness or leave the detail as it is?
Please post your thoughts.

paint a thin white stripe and paint over it with yellow to see if that works before you try thick paint.

One week later and the spiders till aren't done. :(
Well now I've finished my "summer job" so hopefully I'll be able to update this thread more often.
Meanwhile, I'm mostly done with the first spider. Thank you for your advice about painting the stripes white first Old Chestnut, I think it helped. Of course I forgot that I didn't have any yellow so I painted the stripes orange instead. What do you guys think?

I also got started on the second one. I'm went for a more earthly colour scheme with this one.

Please leave feedback, I'm always looking for ways to improve my painting.

I stripped Balin today and am planning to repaint Dain as well so you may see a couple dwarves here in the near future.

I particularly like the second one although I like the strikingness of the first one too.

There is a spiders gallery on GW which has a cool looking bright green one. The orange spider looks cool good work.

I'm glad you guys like the spiders. Is there anything that I should fix/improve on them?

I've got started on Balin and Dain. Here are pictures of Balin.

I'm trying to paint some of the projections are Dain's helmet like gems. Does anyone of any advice or links to useful articles?
Please leave comments and criticisms.

Nice work on Balin so far! The red look really nice, and the silver isn't to bad either.

As for how to paint gems, I like to work from dark to light. So for example I want to paint a gem red. I would start with a 50/50 mix of Scab red and Chaos black. Then, depending on where the light is coming from, I highlight with scab red. Next I work up the highlights until I get to blood red with a little bit of skull white mixed in. And the last thing left to do is add a little dot of white on the darkest area of the gem, and it's done! If you want to you could also varnish it to make it a little bit shinier, and it also seems to even out the highlights. Here's a couple pics of a mini with a gem painted using the same technique I just described.

Sorry if the gem's a little hard to see, if you want I could take a better pic and show it to you if you want.

Hope I was somewhat helpful!

Thank you, PowerofWill, for your advice. The gem on your Easterling looks great. I tried your method though it didn't turn out anywhere near as well, hopefully they're still recognizable as gems. Well here's Dain.

While Dain's still got quite a ways to go Balin is almost done, just needs to be based.

Please leave feedback, it's never too late to fix something.

They both look great, the hair on Balin is especially good 8)
The cream fits the red very well, looking forward to seeing them both finished. Are they finecast?

Your painting on those horrible IMO dwarves makes them look superb.
