Do you think a one-off 'Finecast Only' challenge in September is a good idea?

I vote Monster! :D All the other ideas sound good. I know the four hobbits idea would get my fellowship painted...

I like the idea of spicing the challenge up a little every now and then, but sticking to its roots for most of the time. Good call Jake.

As for the characters from a scene I'm a little unclear, do you mean people could paint a group of characters from a set scene of their choice (aragorn, legolas, gimli and the king of the dead for example) or do you mean a scene will be decided beforehand (the council of elrond for example) and entrants paint one miniature of their choice from said scene?

The entrants would paint a group of miniatures from a scene. So one would paint The Witchking AND Eowyn AND Merry. The scene could either be up to choice or predetermined. You and Mr. Lee (Dagorlad) can decide!

It would be really awesome to see what scenes people pick out and how well they can tell the story through the painting. For a scene such as Boromir's Death do they choose to show Boromir on his knees dying or Boromir still standing, fighting with maybe just the one arrow in his chest.

I'm just throwing out ideas, feel free to flush them out.

Interesting idea Drake, but that might have to be a two month challenge as some people have a hard time getting one miniature finished in time for their monthly entry. Maybe if we voted on a scene and allowed people to pick one character from the scene to paint that might work better. Say the Council of Elrond...someone may choose Gandalf, while another Frodo, or Bilbo (book), or Boromir, etc.

Yes that's more along the lines of what I would say would be best. Like you say painting all the characters from a specified scene could take a while, I for one know I would never manage it. 2 or 3 models for the 'Command Group' challenge suggested would be fine, but any more is too much in myber opinion.

Plus your idea draked would be more along the lines of the OR Awards' Master Craftsmen category which I don't know whether or not you are familiar with it as a new member but it is basically where a theme is chosen and members design/craft/convert/paint up a display of terrain/miniatures to match said theme. And we definitely wouldn't want to detract from the Awards in any way when they are ressurected.

Yikes, completely forgot about the OR Awards' Master Craftsmen category...Drake's idea would be right in line with that.

Makes sense to me! I will have to take a look at the old One Ring Awards! I saw that this years or last years were canceled due to the move of the site?

Yes they've been put on hold for a while now while Alan (Dagorlad) has been working on rebuilding the website after the hack a while back.

Thank you for the clarification Jake. Any estimates as to when they will be back up? I'm sorry I seem to be pushing the thread in a different direction, PM me, if you could, the answer.

Now let's get more ideas for "Special Challenges" going!:)

What about any models of a certain race eg hobbits, orc, men, elves, trolls etc... ?

It's not a bad idea but I find it a bit broad. I prefer themes such as Alans' Royalty suggestion, something with a clear theme. But that's just me :)

None yet besides the idea of a christmas related one for the December one. Going to try and get a list of my own ideas written down over the next couple of weeks though. Then I can add other peoples suggestions to the list and we should have enough for the next few of 'special' challenge voting periods.

I've got another suggestion that I really like; how about a Father and Son category? For example: Denethor and Boromir/Faramir, Arathorn and Aragorn, Elendil and Isildur, Theoden and Theodred, Elrond and Elladan/Elrohir, Thranduril and Legolas... are there any others? We could also, of course, allow for conversions. So, you could have Beregond and Bergil, Drogo and Frodo, etc.

Yep. If you include conversions the possibilities are almost endless.

Instead of a Christmas theme, you could do winter (snowy bases and paint schemes)...
