Thanks again. My question is what is the most likely interpretation of the 'Great Beasts' that pulled Grond on the Pellennor?

Following PJ yes... However, you could also interpret them as some troll-kind

Good, Ragbur, but that wasn't the interpretation I was going for, keep going :)

Your question seems subject to personal whim. Here's the passage:

"Great engines crawled across the field; and in the midst was a huge ram, great as a forest-tree a hundred feet in length, swinging on mighty chains. Long had it been forging in the dark smithies of Mordor, and its hideous head, founded of black steel, was shaped in the likeness of a ravening wolf; on it spells of ruin lay. Grond they named it, in memory of the Hammer of the Underworld of old. Great beasts drew it, orcs surrounded it, and behind walked mountain-trolls to wield it."

There's no correct way to interpret "Great beasts". For example, why couldn't they be giant pink ducks? That's as good an answer as any.

Genra Elessar is right... Tolkien didn't describe them further...

If you look at the paragraph before that passage you will notice he following settence: "There came great beasts, like moving houses in the red and fitful light, the mumakil of the Harad dragging through the lanes amid the fires huge towers and engines"

So that would be my answer, however I may just hand it over to General Elessar.

Due to lack of a person giving the answer I was expecting (mumakil), it appears I was wrong to assume that other people would notice that the grey nellies were called 'great beasts' in the paragraph before it, but alas, my guess is as good as yours.

Therefore, I officially hand the quiz over to General Elessar for the best explanation. Your turn General Elessar.

Actually, that's an interesting interpretation of "great beasts", I've never heard that one before.

Anyways, my question: what was the name of the sequel to LotR that Tolkien considered writing?

I'll give it a shot as I don't often take part in this quiz.

They were the sons of Duinhir and they took part in the battle of the pelennor fields with their men to aid Gondor.
