Well I have a very long running thread from when I first joined the website but as it is so long running it is filled with miniatures I am not happy with, miniatures I no longer own etc. so I figured it was time for a fresh start as I am starting to work on my Gondor army.

First up is a Knight of Minas Tirith, For the moment, the horse and base are both finished. The rider is not finished as only the armour has been painted so far, I still need to revisit the sloppy areas with chaos black so I can see all of the details again to finish him off.

As for the horse, it is actually the first horse I have ever painted as I've always thought they'd be too difficult for me. I finally decided to man up and paint one. Personally I am happy with the result but I would appreciate your feedback as well. I have 14 more of these to paint up as well as Faramir and a Banner Bearer to accompany them so I have gone for a simple and quick scheme, so hopefully it looks effective too. Here it is in its current state (the lance hand has been temporarily attached with unmixed greenstuff for the purposes of the photo):

Horses can be difficult because of the large flat areas, but I just look at it as a blank canvas!

Excellent work so far. I can't wait to see the whole unit done up!

Yes, yes...that empty area can be a troublesome spot, but what helps when in a pinch are spots...yep, make your horse spotted. :)

As great as that would look done well, I think I'm going to practise varying shades of plain brown, black, grey and white horses first. Freehand of any kind I've never been good at :P

Ahhh, it's easy...doesn't have to be perfect or symmetrical which is a plus. Paint up a brown horse and add a spot of white or two on him, give him some socks and maybe a little bit on his neck or nose and tah-dah! :)

Here is a link to my Mounted Radagast...black horse, white spots. Not the best picture, but you get the point. :)

That looks great Dave, cheers for the advice. If it's as easy as you say I may well give it a shot on a later Knight 8)

Aye that's what I did with this one. Hopefully they came out alright on the picture and you can make them out as I was pretty pleased with how they turned out for a first attempt at a horse.

Thanks. It's actually not gold but painted using Snakebite Leather, getting progressively lighter on the raised edges.

I did some more work on the rider last night and should hopefully get it finished at some point today. I'll take picture later in the day when the lighting is better.

Finished it quicker than I'd imagined and the day has quickly brightened up so here are final photos. The rider was a relatively rushed job compared to the horse, but I'm happy all the same.

The next one I will paint will be this Faramir, however I'm going to have to get cracking on my Lurtz for the painting challenge as well so it might be a bit longer until my next update.
