I'm very farmilar with Middle Earth but have never heard anything of a shaman. An Uruk-Hai shaman? Seems very out of character. I've only read The Hobbit and Fellowship of the Ring but I never saw such a thing in the movies. I believe I've read this a GW invention. Of anyone could offer some explanation on that it'd be spectaculr.

As far as I know (and I am fairly sure I am right) I agree with you draked that it is something that GW made up. having read both the hobbit and LoTR many times as well as the silmarilion and unfinished tales a few times there doesn't seem to be anything like shamans and it seems very un-tolkienesque. As far as I know GW doesn't really provide any backstory for the shamans.

Thats right there is no backstory for the shamans, but there are many uruk captains and there is nothing in the books saying that some of them didn't have the power to inspire their troops into a mad frenzy! There are alot of GW models which do not have a reference from tolkein but they were created to spice up the game and its not as if GW are claiming that Gil-Galad can ride a dragon just because its warhammer.

Maybe the uruk shamans can call upon melkor? I remember there being some kind of temple for the gods from the goodies - with the white tree in it.

While it's true the shamans are a GW invention, it's not a bad one. It's not hard to imagine that some Orcs/Goblins/etc. had the ability to use some primitive form of magic.

I don't think it's a bad invention in terms of marking fun armies to play for the games, but for the lore or whatnot I think it is a terrible invention. It seems to me to be very un-tolkienesque. There really isn't a lot of magic in the world in LoTR and the people who can use it are usually very mighty people/creatures and are few and far between.

The magic in Middle-Earth is more in items than in spellcasting. There is a number of lesser items that are relics of older times, such as the blades of the Hobbits, or even newly crafted ones. The shaman may be channeling the power of an amulet or a staff.
