So would you say the fallen realms are the next best evil army to Mordor?

I will say giving a list of strengths and weaknesses is like asking for a book, or many magazine articles. :) Dig through the Army List and the Tactics forums, there are many recent posts and ideas in there. The upshot is, you can make almost any army work, especially if you're after fun games and aren't mega-competitive. Some just need a little finessing.

I would complement your friend's Mordor army so they have different characteristics. If he relies of hordes of Orcs with a Troll and maybe some Warg Riders, then go with Easterlings and Kataphracts or maybe ally in some Morgul Knights. But if he relies on heavier troops like Morannon Orcs, Uruks and other tough troops, go with Harad and field scores of bows + spears + corsairs and maybe work up to some Mahud and/or the Mumak. That way you get a little more variation.

No... That means they are easy to play with... It doesn't mean they aren't strong...

Hey NotLegolasJustTipsy,
I've changed the title of your topic to SBG vs WOTR as I noticed that was what you meant...
Welcome to the One-Ring btw :-)

The reason the Fallen Realms are good is that there are 5 boxes of plastics that you can buy to build your army without needing to spend too much money. These troops generally don't have that many variations to their uses (Haradrim, Raiders and Corsairs using horde tactics while the Easterlings and Morgul Knights have some staying power with their high defence) , and so are good to start out with. However, if you start getting a big army with a good amount of elites, these plastics will still form the core of your army.

They look GREAT.

The Fallen Realms army is one of the prettiest I have ever seen once it gets all painted up. Most human fantasy armies are just standard variations on medieval knights, like Gondor, but the FR just look so cool.

Also you can take Khamul without seeming quite so cheesy. You get to play with Mumaks, and they are a reasonably powerful army.

I agree, I was just stating the advantages of them for beginners. I have an Easterling (SBG) army that looks good without me having put any real effort into it. I'm planning on getting a Mumak (Christmas ftw) and maybe some Haradrim infantry, and they do look pretty good, though I guess I'll have to put some extra effort into them.

That there is 160 bucks down the drain.
Do Mumaks even perform that well?

In WotR they CAN perform well. They are by far the most random formation in the game. Sometimes they can roll well and trample all over the enemy, forcing fall backs and inflicting massive damage and once they stampede they can inflict even more damage. Other times they die in the first turn or even worse, trample all over your own troops inflicting massive damage.

At the tourney last weekend, one of the FR players had his Mumak shot at first turn, the hit caused 2 wounds and 2 crew removed. At the end of the turn he rolled for stampede and got boxcars, it then stampeded right into impassible terrain and was killed. In another game a couple months ago, that same Mumak kept my Dragon pinned down for 3 turns and eventually trampled it to death before I could kill it.

That said, they are fun units and look incredible on the battlefield.

How do they perform in SBG?

better in smaller games cos its harder to beat 'em, but in larger games they're easy to pin down ith a hero and his bodyguards

The Harad sourcebook gave some nice upgrade items that make the Mumuk a little better in SBG. I do like the consistency in SBG for sure. I used it a few times, even on heavily terrained tables, to success. It's best against basic troops though. You may get stuck and hung up working on a Hero or Monster (but depending on your tactics and goals that may not be a bad thing either). It's harder to use in a lot of scenarios but it can be made more flexible.

In WotR it can really be devastating considering the rules for crushing Companies and such, but the random movement is the kind of variable I really don't like. I've had a few times where I'll roll less than 4" of forward movement for myself, and yet get 10"+ for movement when it stampedes...and that random die almost always puts it right back over my own best forces. I know it's all random...but I wish it would be a little LESS random.

That being said, I have one painted and regularly serving in my Harad army for both SBG and WotR. I managed to get two more a few weeks ago for only about $50 total. I doubt I'd use more than two ever in SBG, probably just one, but in WotR they are pretty cheap when you're looking at a 1500 - 2000 point force that I could see playing 3.
