My wife went out into the garden this afternoon to water the lawn and came running back inside all excited. A koala had climbed up into our large tree and was happily munching on gum leaves. How on earth he managed to get there is beyond me and our garden is fenced off completely and the nearest bushland is about 2km away!

We'll see if he stays there for a few days or moves off on his own accord. If he gets distressed because he can't find his way back to his natural habitat, then we'll call the animal welfare society. (We know it's a "he" because he made a grunting gurgling noise which is a male's mating call)

That's great, I love animals too!
I am hoping to go to Australia for some time in a couple of years. :)
Nice pics by the way.

I call him 'Winnie' in honour of 'Pooh Bear.'

He's gone now - he climbed down this morning and jumped onto the fence. Then wandered along it across the neighbour's back garden to safety.

If Koalas can climb trees then its rather likely they can climb fences too.

OMG!!! how cuteeeeeee.
Thanks for sharing the pix Dag, that last pic of winnie will be on my desktop background for a while.

Are people allowed to have koalas as pets there? You guys so lucky to have koalas, kangaroos, and platypus in your country. Those 3 might be my favorite animals.
Theres only raccoons and birds in my backyard. Though they are cute too, but not like koalas.

Be careful, koala's seem to be used often for stealing purposes, due to the fingerprints, you see (if we have to belief QI...)

Great pictures Alan. Must be great to wake up to wildlife like that in the morning. As DMS mentioned earlier, the only thing we ever get to wake up to in England is cats. That said, I woke up on holiday in Florida this year to find an alligator wandering just outside the netted off garden.

Haha nice one 8)

Hamster: No not really, but i dont see why you would want one for a pet, they have *very* sharp claws as you can see, and often koalas get syphilis...
But yeah, thats pretty cool to have one in your backyard for sure :)

Meneldil, if you do come to aussieland make sure to swing by Adelaide! :-D

I grew up in central FL. Amazing how at the time tubing down the rivers and swimming in the springs when you can see the gators on the bank or floating near the bottom just seemed "normal". :?
