Durin's Bane is the name of the Balrog that lived in Moria that Gandalf killed.

Like I said, the Dragon should NOT be a better/cheaper choice than the Balrog, it's just not right.

It's the only name that was given him, thus it's his name. Just like Mithrandir and Gandalf weren't Gandalf's actual names, just the names that he was given by the various free peoples.

Firstly, just because sooem Dwarves called him urin's bane doesn't mena it s his name, its a nickname, or at best an alias. Also your example Gandalf pes ahve a real name - I can;t remember wht it is but Gandalf and Mithrandir are not his real names.

Secondly, he isn't only referred to as 'Durin's Bane', he's also called; -The Balrog of Morgoth', 'Nameless Terror', 'Flame of Udin' and others. None of these (including Durin's Bane) are his actual name. His name is not known. He is certyainly NOT called Durin's Bane. Fel free to refer to him as 'Durin's Bane', 'The Balrog' or 'Flame of Udin' if you want, but they are not his actual name. (The most accurate name is to simply call him 'The Balrog'.

Since there were 7 Balrogs, you CAN NOT simply call him "The Balrog" or "The Balrog of Morgoth". Legolas said A balrog, not THE balrog. Gandalf's actual name was Olorin. I can't decifer what you're saying "your example Gandalf pes ahve a real name". Durin's Bane isn't a nickname, it's actually a title given him by his enemies. It's no different than calling Aragorn Ellasar, or Strider, or even Isildur's Heir. They are interchangable. However, seeing as ALL the Balrogs were "Balrogs of Morgoth" or "Nameless Terrors" or "Flames of Udun", you simply can not say that they are his names, those describe him. He is, however, the only Balrog who killed Durin, thus Durin's Bane is the ONLY title that applies ONLY to him.

In Tolkien's works titles and names are somewhat interchangeable and people and entities can have a multitude of names.

No, Durin's Bane is certainly not its "true name", any more than Gandalf, Sauruman, Treebeard, Elessar, Strider, Gollum, or host of others are, but I doubt many would argue that those aren't names of the respective characters.

Exactly. Tolkien gave the more important characters many names. For instance, Morgoth wasn't Morgoth's actual name, it was Melkor. It's just that He wasn't called anything but Morgoth after he stole the Silmarils.

It's the ONLY available name. Tom Bombadil IS NOT Tom's real name, but it's the first one mentioned for him and the one most used to describe him.

It is NOT a name. I'd rather refer to it as 'The Unnamed Balrog who Survived until the Third Age, Killed Durin, and was Simultaneously Killed by and Killed Gandalf the Grey (Olorin)'

It could also be shortened to 'The Last Balrog' , 'The third Age Balrog' 'Gandalf the Grey's Bane', 'The Death-by Gandalf Balrog'

For all we know there could be other Balrogs in hibernation, so the first 2 are out, you get a name for killing someone not the other way around , and no one knew that Gandlaf killed him except for the Three Hunters so the last 2 are out, AND Tolkien never called it ANY of those things, so all 4 of them are out.
