And my point is he doesn't have a name. So i'm willing to end this discussion about 'Bob the Balrog' too.

All the Ainu had names, it's just that Tolkien never specified what they all were.

Sorry, I meant to say, Tolkien never revealed his name.

But he gave us his title, Durin's Bane, which would be interchangable with whatever name Tolkien would have given him. Like how Mithrandir and Gandalf were interchangable and were used as his name, even though neither of them were his actual name.

At least you didn't just say its his name. Yes taht title is uniwque to him and yes feel free to call him that, but I personally don't like to use that term, unless I ever used one in a game against dwarves.

That's what I like about WotR, you can (though you would need to be in a huge game and it would be pretty jerkish to do so) have more than one Balrog because they're a rare and not legendary formation.

I played a Gondolin game in SBG in which one side had a lot of goblins, orc, trolls and warg riders as well as 4 Balrogs, against elves and Istarii (yes ther's been a time warp)

Is Durin's Bane a set of words by which the Balrog in question is known or referred to?

Anyway do we all agree that the dragon with the magical upgrade is actualy better than a balrog?

Unfortunately, yes. Though I think that Durin's Bane is better in SBG which is as it should be.

"Have you heard nothing the Lord Elrond has said?" His name is Durin's Bane!

"The title that is Durin's Bane
Should not be mistaken for a name
It's not good at all
To name a Balrog at all
So stop calling the Balrog Durin's bane"

"1. A word or words by which an entity is designated and distinguished from others." from the dictionary entry for name.
"a word or term by which a person or thing is commonly and distinctively known" same as above.
"10. A descriptive name" from the dictionary entry for title.
The only difference between a name and a title is that the title IS desciptive, whereas the name doesn't have to be. So your limerick proves yourself wrong.

A dictionary definition has to be worded in a certain way so that it can be understood by people daft enough to look up words such as 'name'. Also I was meaning its not his actual name, and it isn't. It's almost as bad as thinking that the film-made character, Guritz is called Skully.

Draugluin wrote:

It's only commonly known as that by the (stupid) dwarves. The Orcs of Moria for example are more likely to call it 'the God of Shadow and Flame'

Draugluin wrote:

I was using title in a broad sense and was really referring to the word 'nickname' the dwarves gave him but the beats aren't right for the limerick.

A limerick is only meant to be a humourous verse, not a philisophical argument.

A dictionary description has to be worded a certain way so that people can look up the definition of "name" to prove daft people wrong.
