Nah, just those two. I have the Great Beast assembled and Ashrak undercoated, planning to paint him tomorrow. I'm loving the swarm of tiny spiders all over him!

I've been wanting a large centre piece model for a while now and was going to get the Cave Drake until these new releases came along. Almost got the Watcher but was gradually swayed over. Maybe I can convert it instead. Ashrak was more of an impulse buy. I've wanted a second shaman for a while and when I saw his rules decided that I wouldn't mind him. Seeing the actual model, I'm not regretting it too much

Hopefully you'll get to see painted pics of these two soon!

Update! Sorry, it's not the Great Beast, though that is coming along. Hope to get some work done on it tomorrow. However, I have completed Ashrak! I must say that he was quite fun to paint, and I'm itching to try my hand at sculpting some Giant Spiders to accompany him. Though I'm half wanting to wait to see the Hobbit versions.

Anyway, I'm not the best painter and this isn't the best light, but it gives you an idea:





I'm happy with the brown as it helps the spiders stand out. Not sure about the grey though, initially it was red. I'm open to opinions on that one! Might try and get a daylight photo tomorrow. Speaking of which...

I agree with you on the brown cloak. It looks like a ragged piece of cloth a goblin would wear. I think that the grey isn't bad either, if I were to change it I would also change the colour of the cloak as well in order for it to match. Very nice job on the eyes

There is an article in the site that shows how to sculpt little critters on the bases including a big spider.

Here's a mini-update, the Great Beast ready for priming. Included are Ashrak and an Orc Warrior for scale purposes. Also might give a better idea of what Ashrak looks like in daylight.



I'm planning to do the Howdah after for ease of painting and then the Orcs last. The mold lines have been annoying. And there are a lot of tiny bubbles underneath, though I'm hoping they won't be seen once painted. They were too small to be bothered with greenstuff. Speaking of which, I kinda went overboard in my usage. I had a heap mixed up for a spider sculpt attempt so I just basically covered all the joint lines to make the flow smooth but really I would have been fine with 3 small spots (mainly the head and the stomach where there was a big bubble). So the sculpt isn't as bad as it looks!

Let me know what you think. Still gotta work out how to paint the hooves and still undecided on the horn (now that I've painted it, I have a feeling it'd be really good as a dark colour ). It's hide will probably get another highlight.

My, that is looking very nice. Great job. But wow, this guy isn't that big, about the size of a mordor troll lying on his side. I don't think I'd spend the money on him, but it's great to see somebody else get one and do it justice with a good paint job.

That Great Beast looks very nice, I'm glad I bought one. Yours is well done, if you ignore its head, it looks very much like a real rhino with your painting. Thank you for your hard work.

The beast is looking great but could do with bit more shading. maybe mix a little dark red with the base coat. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the howda

Yikes it's been a while. An update on what's been going on. Firstly I lost motivation for my Great Beast but didn't want to update until it was done, so I have done some other painting (though a bit of 40k as well). I've also been very busy in real life and away. But I'm back now and decided I'd finally update this thread as I'm getting back into painting.

For the following photos I managed to borrow a better camera, so I'm hopeful the image quality may be slightly improved.

Firstly, my Great Beast of Gorgoroth. Still unfinished and now slightly damaged after an exercise ball incident (thankfully it was the only thing damaged and wasn't too bad):

I decided to give the howdah metal plating and black cloth.

Also unfinished. From memory I've done 4 different skin tones, a couple of different leather varieties and about 4 clothing colours. Diverse but still unified, no Orc is the same.

Lots of painted minis - great stuff. The GBoG is coming along nicely - the crew look very well. The new camera is working well except that in a couple of shots the minis are slightly blurred - maybe you were inside the minimum focal distance? One other point - a white background will make the camera underexpose slightly as the metering systems are set up for the average 17% grey ambient colour equivalent. Using a snow photo mode can overcome this (some cameras will compensate automatically) but another way is to go with some neutral background like a green battlemat, a medium blue/grey piece of cloth - just something that is plain and neither too dark nor too bright.

Thanks Dorthonion, I'll keep that in mind. Unfortunately my next picture was also taken using the same methods. However I shall try a different background in future to see if it helps. Even with this flaw, I still feel the pictures are better.

As the astute may have noticed from the previous pictures, I caved (excuse the pun) the Goblin Town box. I have quite a sizable Goblin force already, of the Moria variety and all painted green. So I figured I'd paint one of the new Goblins green and see what I thought.




The problem is that I'm not sure what I think... Opinions?

I'm not a fan of green goblin's anyway, so I don't think it's a success here (even though it's very nicely executed).

Personally, I think its very well painted but green is a terrible choice for LOTR Orcs. Its more suited to Warhammer Orcs and Orks.
