Seriously though this is a constant auction he has going, so don't bid too much on it, because you can get it for his minimum bid, so that should go for everyone.

Understood, Cheers 8)

ooooh that watcher in the water head is pretty tempting, could easily scultp tenticles out of clay or something and then not pay £44 for the gw version!

Speak to Ukfreddybear if you want a watcher head - the one he does is probably cheaper - see my WIP for pics :)

Its made from plaster of paris , and yeh for the sculpters on here probably easy to make. I couldn't do it but then I'm just a painter.

I've also been desperate to build Grond so I'll have to pick up one of these moulds too.. I'm going to settle with just the 2 Great Beasts though

I was thinking two great beasts though I was half hoping to find a cheaper alternative than GW, a platic rhino model that could be easily adapted perhaps.

Mine was made long ago around about 2005, using the guide from White Dwarf issue 282. It was just under six inches in length, with tentacles individually based to the right scale. When the GW tentacles came out, I noticed that they were a lot smaller, and as a result other sculptors created Watcher heads more suited in size to them (around 4inches). The mold I created of my head (not literally) is now becoming quite warped and brittle so I don't even know if I could cast any more plaster ones now anyhow. The very last cast I gave to DMS which had been sat on my shelf for about two years. No point doing another now GW have finally brought one out.

Bear in mind that the 'great beasts' drew Grond from Mordor, across the Anduin and then over the Pelennor Fields. Tolkien writes that some of these beasts stampeded when shot from the walls, but doesn't specifically state that they were pulling Grond at the time. What he is clear about are the trolls wielding the machine, so you might consider using Mordor Trolls - especially the Loaders - to be pushing Grond forward the final few yards. This removes the need for any beasts at all, if Grond is about to unleash its magical fury against the gate of Minas Tirith. Of course it would make for an interesting scenario if Grond was attacked while moving up with the rest of the siege train...

As an alternative for the framework, you may consider the beading available in many DIY/hardware shops that are often hardwoods but cut quite fine and in different widths, styles, etc.

Cheers guys, good to know. So 4-6 inches in length is the range, okay I will keep an eye out for WD282 on Ebay, but in the meantime Dave if you have any mugshots please send them over so I can get started with the sculpting lol :P

If you PM me your email again I will send you the Watcher sculpting article I did for TLA many moons ago. The WD article is also reprinted in the Best of White Dwarf with the Balrog on the front cover.
