They're partially based on Gimli, and the sceletons in Moria to though. But GW really went overbopard on the axes. Most of them would probably actually use swords or other weapons.

That's why my dwarves have 20% axes, 40% halberds, 30%swords and 30%hammers. But Iron&Khazad guards, the most awesome of all dwarves aremade up by GW, aswell as the King's Champion, and Floi, btw I hear everyone saying that Floi was from the times of Durin, but as Loremaster of Moria he could have been in Balin's expedition, am I right?

Floi was the name of a young Dwarf in Balin's expedition. GW tuned him into something else.

Well, I'll still use GW's Floi as Tolkien's Floi

I call him Ori, he was the scribe after all.

Actually, Tolkien was pretty specific on the fact that the majority of dwarves used axes. Probably about 70%. The other 30% would be swords, maybe some spears and a good number of bows.

Could you reference that? because I could have sworn that the whole axe-obssesswas made up by the films ang GW, and by other fantasy authors/writers/etc

I am a bit with Gothmog here, can't think of anything where it is stated that Dwarves mainly use axes. In fact I think at the battle of the five armies it is said all Dwarves had swords with them. On the other hand though, we shouldn't forget that in battle cries like 'Baruk Khazâd!' the axes are specifically named.

From the hobbit:
Quote:
...Each one of his folk was clad in a hauberk of steel mail that hung to his knees... In battle they wielded heavy two-handed mattocks, but each of them had also a short broad sword at his side and a roundshield slung at his back...

For me, GW's plastic Dwarves do not represent the Dwarves of the Iron Hills, so it is likely that we will get another range of Dwarves, more like the metal versions, either replacing the current ones or existing alongside them.

As for the original question: GW believes LotR advertises itself, so doesn't need to pay money for it to be advertised, meaning less people know about it and what Telchar said in an earlier post happens.

The above example, while mattocks aren't really axes, I'd say they're close enough. Also, Baruk Khazad. In Silmarillion, I think when the dwarves face Glaurung the first time, they are said to be wielding axes. Also I think Yavanna had said something about the dwarves and their axes, though this might just be cause you need axes to chop down trees.

Orophin.

And the fanbase for LOTR is far greater, only the fanbase for GW games is far smaller among them. Or was that what you meant?
