Awesome, thanks for the heads-up! Didn't expect to hear something like that so soon, I'll have to keep an eye out for updates from now on. Kinda makes me want to make a dwarven force, though whether I'll manage to fit that in amongst all the other ongoing projects is another matter entirely :)

Note this is speculation If This plays out like it did for the last movies. We will get glimpses starting in November. Any thing PJ thinks should stay secret will release after the movie. There was a photo of the Mouth of Sauron in one of the RTOTK art books. The Book did not release until after the film. This is what I think we should expect for the WD. We may see some photos of some of the Figures starting in November but nothing important before then.I hope I am wrong.Time will tell.

The CEO stated in his report that everything for the Hobbit is due out in December to coincide with the film :)

pg6:

http://investor.games-workshop.com/wp-c ... -final.pdf

Quote:
For those of you who are Games Workshop Hobbyists, our new products pipeline is probably what interests you most. Sadly this is not something that I can say too much about: keeping details of our future releases secret until just before they are available to buy adds to the excitement and success of each launch. In the last 12 months we have narrowed the disclosure window to the weekend before release and sales of new products - and of White Dwarf which showcases the new products - have been significantly higher as a result.
What I can say is that we will release some amazing products this year. Products that will surprise and delight Hobbyists. We plan to do so every month, including December 2012 when we will release our new Hobbit range to coincide with the film. And... ahh, but that would spoil the surprise. You will just have to wait and see. You will not be disappointed.

Maybe GW will be doing a Necron-style resurrection. (glowing green eyes, that sort of thing)

I am a newer forum junkie and have gotten my feet wet painting. I am still in the dark here about what white dwarf is and if I should pick it up? Do they release promo pieces? I enjoy the hobby and am addicted so would getting the magazine be a good idea?

No, probably not. Its not very good these days, little more than an overpriced glorified catalogue full of adverts and double page pictures with a couple token hobby articles thrown in. Anyone who's subscribed or otherwise bought the magazine regularly over the last decade will know what I'm talking about.

All I can suggest is, everytime theres a new issue visit your local GW store or newsagents and have a flick through. If theres anything specifically useful to you e.g. painting guides, tutorials etc then you could get it. On occasion, new rules or scenarios are released e.g. June 2012 had rules for two new Warhammer 40K kits. I advise against subscribing - only get the issues that are definately useful.

No, they rarely come with models. I know of just two issues, over the last 10 years. And that was just sample sprues for a new release. However, a new model for the eponymous White Dwarf (a semi-canonical Warhammer Fantasy character who lends his name to the magazine) is released every year for Annual Subscribers only. I suppose you could get them off ebay, but definately not from GW other than an expensive subscription.

Just to give you a little (*highly opionated*) context, the last White Dwarf issue which I bought, June 2012, was almost 120 pages, yet had over 70 pages of what I would term as Advertisements (mainly for the latest releases). There were a handful (and by handful I mean you could probably number them on one hand) of actually useful hobby articles -painting guides, scenarios, some rules for new kits (Stormtalon and Ork Bomber). But even these were mostly slanted towards new releases. As I said, it really is a glorified catalogue and feels as such. Over the last decade, I subscribed for at least 5 years. When I started I absolutely loved the magazine and would read it cover to cover, even the things relating to games I didn't play. But nowadays I rarely read more than 20 pages out of 120. :(

Basically, don't subscribe and flick through every issue before you buy to ensure you actually find it interesting.

(edit) From Dezartfoxes comment, the very words of the GW CEO himself.

White Dwarf = new product showcase.

It used to be a Hobby Magazine by Hobbyists, for Hobbyists. Now its a Monthly Catalogue.

I apologise for being so cynical, but these things have to be said.

Cynical or not I asked for opinions! Thanks again! I am always skeptical of subbing for anything. I just wanted some more info before I made a decision!

Normally I thumb through at the Newsagents before deciding whether or not it is worth buying, but this month they have once again annoyingly encased it with a plastic film preventing browsing.

Can someone give me a breakdown of the content this month please?

I looked at it at the store. No LOTR. The Hobbit photo above is all. I don't Keep up with 40K or WHFB any more  so I did not pay much attention. New Chaos I think.

There is also one page showing the cave drake, blackshields and king's champion going into finecast.

Next months WD just arrived issue 293 in the post, a single page advert just showing Biblo this month, similar text to last month. No other LOTR mention apart from Finecast releases we all know about.

The whole issue is again put over to 40k

But the paper it is printed on is new, nice and matt! actually thats the only good thing about the issue!
