The armour looks dull and realistic, a far cry from GW's glossy paint job. I like your a lot more, they look like they've seen more than their fair share of battle! May I ask how you did the armour?

Thanks Hurin!

I'm thinking I might write a painting guide when I paint up my next batch, as it's proving a popular request. :)

Quote:
The scheme calls for very light drybrushing, building up in layers.

* First off, drybrush Chainmail Silver over the armour/shield/mail. Be careful to leave some black definition in the recesses.
* Secondly, drybrush Burnished Gold on top of that. Again, leave recesses.
* Now, mix together 1/2 Bestial Brown and 1/2 Catachan Green. Add water until it starts to thin out (but not too thin!). Wash the armour and shield - I find it's better to put a little too much on, then dry your brush off and spread it out, even painting it into the recesses.
* When the wash has dried, check it. If you think you did it too thin, do another wash.
* When it's dried, mix together 1/2 Chainmail and 1/2 Burnished Gold. Do a very light drybrush over, picking out the raised details and the edges of the armour.

For the Elven Cloak:

*Mix together 1/2 Catachan Green, 1/4 Stonewall Gray, 1/4 Black. Gradually highlight, begining the first highlight with more gray. For the subsequent highlights, add Chainmail Silver. The final highlight should only be very subtle.

UPDATE:

My Elf Command is done, and I've finalised a basing scheme for the rest of the army. I'm not entirely happy with the banner, but it was the best I could do - the photographs have actually highlighted a few problem areas where the lines need smoothed out a little. But still, it came out better than my blueprints!

I dunno I'm just a perfectionist :P

I edited in the colour scheme underneath the one for the armour above. I tried to translate to GW colours (at least old ones) but I use primarily Vallejo paints, aside from Runefang Steel and Burnished Gold.

Works well, I'll keep it in mind for when I (eventually) get round to elves. :)

There is nothing to dislike about that banner!! I can be awful critical of my work as well, and if I produced that I'd well pleased! Well done mate!! :)

I do for banners! I sketched out a few designs and then painted them on paper first.

The elves look very good. As always I think they could do with a spot colour, such as a red sash, but that's a matter of taste. You've achieved a solid blue and brilliant metal. That banner is great, as well.

Wow thanks for all the kind words you guys! It might sound silly but they definitely go someway to keeping me motivated and painting instead of watching shows or playing Xbox!

I'm going to have a little break from painting for the rest of the week while I source some more hobby supplies so I can finish basing what I've done already... my budget is pretty much spent for now xD

@ Karak Norn - I can see what you mean, but I prefer my Elves more reserved. I think my painting style has moved more toward muted tones anyway.

Well anyway I figured you guys are getting tired of Elves now, so next on my list is Warg Attack Aragorn and Arwen (Ft/Mount 2nd Version).

UPDATE:

I started painting Arwen today, starting with Asfaloth. Let me tell you, I hate painting white. I tried to follow DMS' advice and use watered down layers, which I had mixed results with, so I mixed it with some highlighting and standard drybrushing. I still need to do his hooves and snout, but the horse is pretty much done!

Yes, the infamous white! Notoriously difficult to paint, but I think you have done a fantastic job! 8) It looks great, and you can now look forward to painting the rest of the model. I am certainly looking forward to seeing it painted :)

I think I'm starting to regret painting the horse before the rider. Looks like I'll have to be extra careful! xD
