That looks sick man! I like how dark you've made the skin; it really contrasts well with the fire and red cracks. Could you link the picture in the background as well, or say where you found it? I've been looking for something like that online for ages to go around my game board and that picture would be perfect! Again, excellent work!

That picture if from a 2008 calendar of the Rocky mountains in Alberta, Canada... Your best bet to find something similar is an Internet search of the Rocky mountains in autumn. Incidentally, I picked that picture because of the mountain landscape in John Howe's painting of the Bolrog battling Glorfindel on the mountain.

Thanks

Nice work. I have one of these built and primed somewhere. I am pleased you painted the fire correctly. Niggles me when people get it backwards.

Thanks, and I agree with you here. It's tough to paint though, since the highlighting is backwards from all the other highlighting I do... but at the same time it was fun to try something different...

Maybe next time I'll take the risk and paint the fiery reflection on the surrounding flesh!

Thanks again,
neldoreth

Very nice, especially the flames on the back. In regards to storing the creature, I custom made a large box out of extremely thick cardboard (1/4 inch) and packing tape with enough spots for the Balrog, Fell beasts, and Eagles. Like you, I had a difficult time finding the box to fit the large monsters then decided to make my own.

Making your own bow is a pretty good idea... I might have to try it :) I typically scrounge my boxes from recycling at my office when new computer hardware is ordered, but finding a box that can fit the balrog/fell beast/mumak is tough.... in fact...

I actually broke apart the howda on the mumak to transport it in the moving truck!!!!! It's still stored in pieces...

Thanks,
n.

Thanks all for the positive feedback, I appreciate the flattery

No flattery, Sir. This is a Balrog as Morgoth – or GW - intended them to be.
A masterpiece! :yay:

I wouldn't buy a balrog because my paint job would suck and then I would feel like I wasted $50 :(

That looks awesome. The problem is that it has wings.

Not to say that this isn't a very well painted Balrog (cuz it is), but you can get a good looking Balrog regardless of painting skill. Undercoat the parts where it's like magma (the shoulders, back and arms) red, then dry brush black over that, paint the rest black, then paint the flames and finish any details you might have missed.

A fantastic finish to the Balrog! 8) The metal Balrog's seem to have much more detail than the plastic ones. :( Especially on the legs, the plastic ones are a mess.

Thanks a lot for the overwhelmingly positive feedback! I appreciate it.

I agree that it isn't all that hard to get a good looking balrog either! This one took me about 1.5 months to finish, so it didn't come easy :) But again, I appreciate the positive feedback... But I wonder what I should paint next from Middle-earth? Corsairs? Easterlings? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks again,
n.

Thanks for the feedback... I had indeed planned to work on some High Elves and Corsairs... Easterlings too... but I just did some about 8 months ago (OMG that's longer than I thought :) ) It's been a slow year for painting for me... In any case, I'll post when I'm done some more figures!

Thanks again,
n
