I'm still hoping that the "Free People" piece wins! :)

Your bases are brilliant Kev and I'm sure you would put as much thought and expertise into a terrain piece! :)

This is what I take when I go to the game store to play.

I don't think my example in the other post was very clear.

quick question--- should the terrain be made for Wotr wargaming or Sbg wargaming..... or does it even matter??

Good question :!:
Yes, I think it matters because of the size of the movement trays. For WOTR a forest should be on a small mat to mark the boundary of the difficult terrain. The trees would be placed on top and could be moved to make room for the large bases. I would not allow a tree base to be moved in SBG if I was umpiring. I know some people use the stylized forest rules for SBG too.

There are three yellow forest mats in the photo. Two behind the Hobbit houses and one under the fork in the road, They represent difficult ground that does not disrupt the field of view. In a WOTR game the edge of the mat would represent the edge of the forest for both LOS and movement. So it would not matter where the tree models actually are. The trees could be adjusted to take in to account the movement trays.

Yes I see what you mean now OMW. I suppose it up to the individual in that case if they are designing and making a piece of terrain for SBG or WOTR and how they decide to go about it. I don't think it would be viable to try and dictate which system the challenge is aimed at and rather just leave it to the individual entrant to decide on how to do their entry for their chosen games system.

So I started work for my entry in this catagory and it is looking really great. The concept is what would the your staff is broken look like to me and I went about including six models in it. for the Good side, Gandalf the white, Aragorn (helm's deep), Theoden, and Galandriel (because I thought the soft soceror model would work better. It has Grima on his knees with the knife and Saruman with Palintir in his hand. There is a large oval mirror in the back corner which I painted the great eye in. Saruman is standing on a circle of power with Pentagram in the center. Grima is hiding behind the mirror bowl and ready to strike Saruman down. I will put photos up when I get a camera that is working

glad you like it. I found that set pieces in my stuff that I was unpack and I saw my Saruman with the Pilanthia and thought it would be a cool concept/ So It took me about two and a half hours to get the pieces together, I used some old GF9 movement trays and then put the cobblestone from the russian castle as the flooring. the mirror started off as bronze but then turned into the eye. I put a bunch of layers of varnish on it to make is shine. The star is tin bitz/bronze/gold building the highlights.

That is also a good idea to use the moment trays!

I was thinking about this and while talking to Kev. My idea is that the October contest should be a diaroma, like amen hen, the fate of the witch king and so on and so forth. this way we all get to stretch our imaginations with our idea. The only rule I would use is that you can't use a store bought one like Mines of Moria and other things like that. Whatcha think ~Brian

Ok - how do you feel about starting the terrain challenge as soon as the poll ends ? or would you rather wait until October 1st ?

While it's a nice idea to have a specific theme (Amon Hen, for example), if it's too specific it'll put people off.

This will also put people off. Painting a piece of pre-made terrain nicely is exactly the same as painting a miniature nicely. Not everyone has the time to scratch-build stuff. There are all sorts of things you can do to make it look impressive, from basing it nicely to advanced weathering techniques. People can express their preference for scratch-built terrain over pre-made terrain when they vote for the winning entry.

Painting up a pre-made piece of scenery / terrain is perfectly acceptable - I have an ebob weathertop that I fully plan on using for a challenge at some point.

Hadn't notice this before but seems there has been a terrain challenge on the forum before, though didn't see any results. The post had a novel way of selecting the theme, it broke the book into several chapters at a time and the terrain piece would have had to feature somewhere in these chapters....

Ebob did a version of weathertop some time back , now pretty hard to come by. I've had one in a box for ages so this challenge is the perfect excuse to get it done. Unfortunately it won't fit on a 9X9 base so it'll have to wait.
