Exams are killing my free time and I had to clean my desk in order to replace paints with books, so it's gonna take me 2-3 weeks to have any real progress again..

Luckily I had the time to try paint shop pro (thanks a lot for the suggestion Shieldmaiden). Well I played around for like 10 minutes, and here's what I came up with..



I got catachan green as backround and then put a lightsource on it..
You can see the settings I used. I'm not really sure about the colour of the light source a torch emits.. I put an orange one, no idea if it's the right one..
So questions:
1) Should I go for another lightsource colour? (more red? white?)
2) How do I achieve the colours I marked with A,B,C,D? (I could get them after some experimenting, but maybe someone with a good feeling for it, could save me from the trouble )

Also I got my Thomarillion Items (which are a bit bigger scale than I expected), got some Instamold (which is pretty amazing stuff to work with) and kinda finished gandalf's NMM sword.. I looks like cement sometimes, but oh well.
Ah also got some Εbob minis, they're really nice sculpts..
I forgot my camera @ the garage, will put some pics later..

Maybe you want to reduce the 'darkness' gauge to get more green? IDK, I wasn't referring to that tool (didn't know it existed!) I was intimating you'd get a photo of fire, heighten the contrast and saturation, and then alter the photo to be part see through, then paste it on top of the catachan green, then you get different colours all at once.

So here's the little diorama I'm planning, if you didn't figure it out by the teaser yet..
The positioning I have in mind.. any comments and suggestions are more than welcome..
I still have to find a second ringwraith.. and of course the tavern keeper will be in a sitting position, hiding behind the bar, but it's gonna take me some time to do that..

I think the thomarillion corner bar is a bit taller than I'd like, with an elevated floor it should be spot on..


My first try with instamold + greenstuff..
Just wanted to see the amount of detail it can capture and the whole "melting" in water process, I just pressed it in the air hence the real bad quality in the corners etc.. it looks very promising I must say..


And last the NMM sword.. It's got a bit a "wavy" shape and not straight line, cause it's impossible to make the metal stay in a straight line, but I'm pretty happy with it..




I managed to play a bit more with Paint Shop.. Reducing the darkness gauge was a good idea, got me spot on the colours I'll use..

The Instamold stuff is pretty cool...I've used it a couple of times on smaller things with good results!
Excellent job on the NMM...I am terrible at that technique and have since given up on trying it again.
Ahhh, eBob's Butterbur...that is a fun model to paint up...looking forward to seeing how your conversion comes out!

Looking good! One tip with the Instamold is to build a frame out of Lego or something and squish the hot Instamold into it before taking the impression of the master. Keep the Instamold in the frame until it cools. This keeps it rigid and you get less deformation of the original shape.

So, I'm back to OSL aragorn for the moment.. done most of the highlighting/shading on the cloak.. still needs a lot of work, but it turned out better than I hoped for..
Bad thing I wasted lots of paint till I managed to get the tones I wanted, but I'' know better next time..
Ah also painting the right eye is almost impossible, after 20 tries it's still not done
Anyway enough talk, so voila..







It seems really promising and with it beaing reusable you don't loose anything while experimenting
Thanks a lot! Tried doing NMM on another sword and failed miserably.. I guess it takes a lot of practise to get consistant results, maybe you could give it another try in the future..
Also kinda messed up my gandalf figure.. tried an orange/grey basecoat (which I actually liked a lot) but green/blue shadows didn't work that well..
I'm gonna repaint it in a more traditional brown/grey scheme, because the NMM sword looked really out of place..
Butterbur is a very nice model, looking forward to chopping his head of


I think it would be more dramatic if I minimised it a bit and only kept half the bar, one nazgul and the cook, but I thought let's go for something of a little bigger scale and adventure..
We'll see how it turns out..

Thanks a lot for the info, that's the way I was planning to do it. Unfortunately I was a playmobil guy when I was younger, so I don't have any legos (and my best friend was a lego guy and we used to fight over it all the time, well we still do, but in a more civilised way

Took me quite sometime to paint again..
So a little update on Aragorn..

Got the lighting in his hair done..



And most of the face.. still need to do the beard and some touchups, but it turned pretty ok.. Only thing that is urgh is the right eye.. it's just umpossible to paint it at that angle.. luckily it's not very notable..



Ah also, on the first pic, does he have a ring on the red circle spot? the sculpt is a bit strange there..

OSL is proving to be easier than I'd expect, hardest part is to understand how the light will behave, painting it is not that hard.. (now im sure im gonna mess it up and the OSL God will jinx me )
