The highlights on the cloak from the fire is really good.

Very interested in the diorama. Thats quite a heavy conversion required for the seated barman. Good luck with that.

Intriguing use of Paintshop - I like that idea. The painted Aragorn at Weatherop is fantastic.
Nice scale comparison of the figures and the Thomarillion stuff. It makes the Nazgul look a bit undersized.

Thanks a lot for your comments guys.. Unluckily my right hand got almost broken in a fight a week ago and it still needs some time to be 100% ok, so painting is on hold for the moment..
Me and a friend were attacked by a group of 4 persons (probably because of our haircuts/style, we are not sure yet, things are pretty wild around here, can't really get into an idiot's mind)
Good thing me and my friend both practise martial arts, managed to drive them off, gave them a pretty good beating, we got a bit hurt aswell, ah anyway, I still can't believe what happened..
Gonna buy our martial arts teachers a wholelot of presents for sure

I think it's going to be pretty much scratch built except for the head.. I got some Ebob armatures for proportions, but maybe I'll need the help of a guru (points at a certain fireman )



It seems the thomarillion stuff are a bit oversized for lotr minis.. they can work together, but there's like a 10% difference from perfect..
I got some other stuff like beds/bottles/etc, I'll put some more pics later on to show the scale and the really great details their sculpts have..
Damn I should get done with uni, get unemployed and have more time for modelling

Had some experience in karate when I was younger..

The reason I started martial arts is that I found the gym to be boring.. also I wanted to practise my mind aswell as the body, it's always interesting to try and see what your "opponent's" move is going to be, get your body to act in balance etc.. I'm a pretty peaceful guy, haven't got into a fight since I was a kid, never intented to use it outside of training.. But when your life is under threat it's just instictive actions..
We tried to run at first but we were surrounded..
Funny thing both me and my friend don't really look tough and they got into a shock when we KO'ed the first guy in less than 2 seconds

But still, this whole thing was a pretty bad experience and we still are in a constant alarm state, because it all happened very close to our homes and we're afraid they gonna want a round two..
And thugs like these won't have a problem using knifes or these "metal fist" things.. I still got nightmares about it, not a cool thing at all..

The armature will certainly help. Ebob's are the correct scale for LoTR so you will have an accurate base from which to build the cloth layers. Just do bits at a time. Don't try and do it all in one go because you will get frustrated. The secret to good sculptin is a) research, b) proportion, c) layers d) patience and e) practice. Choosing the right putty and tools also helps depending on what you are trying to sculpt. If you want me to elaborate on any of those things just shout.

Loving the light-effect on Aragorn! Very nice job on that! It's not an easy technique to do it right (I wish I could...)!


Can't resist this... but this sounds like Games Workshop to me aswell, depending on the period the mini's were sculpted.. So, following their line, I'm sure you'll get a bufferzone of 25% (based on orcs, Gimli's, Legolas's and minias tirith folks)

Good luck on the sculpting ! I'm looking forward to see the progress! I've spend last few months working on Hasslefree armatures and it's a thing to take time for, like Dave mentioned.
As another tip, I'd advice that as soon as you feel the greenstuff or other putty is getting to hard to work with, no matter how much it is, throw it away or jab it somewhere it won't hurt. I refused to take a new part of putty, and in my stubborness kept working with a rather elastic greenstuff with the result that I had to remove it the day after anyway, cause it looked just terrible.

Good tip Bart. My left over curing lumps get stuck onto the next Ent armature each time to bulk it out a bit. It will need skinning over eventually anyway so its a good way of using up the hardening putty.

So after another 3 month break, I'm back in business
I have been browsing the forum non stop, but on a super fast mode, so all the people out there doing some very nice paintjobs, both on the new range and the old range minis, sorry I didn't leave a comment, but keep it up

Lotr-wise, after seeing the Hobbit twice, I couldn't resist ordering the Escape from Goblin Town set. While I'm waiting for it, I thought maybe I could paint Bilbo just to get in the mood.

So voila, today's progress:



Also got myself some Vallejo colours and a couple of W&N brushes.
W&N were love at first sight, Vallejo I dunno yet, been having a little trouble so far, I guess I need a little more practise to adjust.

Since acrylics show different wet on the pallete than dry on a model (or my eyesight needs some tweaking) and I'm using a mix of vallejo and gw for the first time, instead of painting each part fully, I decided to basecoat most of the areas to help me decide if my painting scheme was any good.

So here's bilbo with most of the areas (sloppily) basecoated.



I'm thinking that:
1) Shirt is going to be brighter, close to red with maybe some orange in it.
2) Jacket is going to be more purplish.
3) Green part on the jacket is getting a little darker.
4) The scarf around bilbo's neck is getting way brighter (but still greenish)
5) Pants a little purplish aswell.

I've no idea about the colour of the book, I guess brown would be the easiest choice.

So, any ideas/critisism/comments, are welcome

Bilbo looks great, not a fan of the eyes, but that can't be helped much in this scale

Fantastic blending on the waistcoat! However, I do think you've got the eyebrows a bit too bright. You might need to knock them back a shade or two.

Next to impossible to do some serious work on the eyes I'm afraid..
Only Lotr range models I've seen a decent job on the eyes are Gollum and bigger creatures like the Goblin King..
Would love to try some 70mm Lotr minis from Knight Models in the future..



I haven't really painted the hair yet, I was going to make the hair match the eyebrows. Hm, you think it's going to turn out too bright?
Ow, after seeing some photos, eyebrows seem to be darker than hair, you are right. Dammit, I'm afraid I'm gonna spoil it if I try to fix that
Strangely, blending red on a small area turned out easier than expected.

So a little update. The coat is now painted.
Dark purple proved pretty hard to work with.. Also having only one purple colour at my disposal didn't make things easier aswell..

Anyway, pretty pleased with the result, I'm not sure if there's enough contrast but was too scared to try brighter highlights..

(ah, also repainted the pants a little darker)

Mostly a result of taking my time than skill in my case..
Putting down 10-15 really thin layers get's the job done, but it's really time consuming.. Wetblending should be faster, but all my attempts have been pretty unsuccessful so far
