@tomogui, film Gothmog was killed by Aragorn who was the future King and therfore the highest point in Minas Tirith hierarchy. Is that what you want?

OK, the highest point in Minas Tirith was the Tower of Ecthelion, which is where Denethor used the Palantir. I don't see how that is related to Gothmog (book version) being destroyed. Hmm, this one is tough, but I like Gothmog's answer.

The tower of Ecthelion is named in likeness of Ecthelion of Gondolin who slew Gothmog the Balrog who's namesake was the second in command of the battle at Pelennor Fields.

Spot on! Nice work. I admit it was a wicked, tricksy and false riddle, my precious.

Actually, it was a bit of a in-joke for me about Tolkien's habit of recycling names: Ecthelion and Gothmog, in this case. Hope I didn't bend anyone's brain out of shape!

The tower was actually named after an old Steward of Gondor, whom I assume was named after the elf Ecthelion. So that's triple name recycling: 2 people and a tower called Ecthelion!

Interestingly, I noticed that next Monday will be the eighth anniversary of the commencement of this thread. Perhaps we need a Birthday Party under the Party Tree?

What Valar altered Valarin and for what purposes?

The only Valar that I can think of that changed any aspect of the language was Melkor, when he devised the Black Speech. But he didn't alter Valarin itself, rather than adapt it into a different language. And I'm not sure that Melkor was counted amongst the Valar, since by definition he was their enemy.

Dagorlad has one of them, the question is derived from Book V of The History of Middle Earth texts. For a clearer question perhaps, who are the three Valar that brought valinarin to other races, thus changing and altering the languages?

Tolkien was a linguest, he drew out charts on how his languages derived from the original valarin . . . the chart can be found in Book V of The History of Middle Earth book. I thought it was a bit of a "chestnut" to quote gollum when I originally asked it. Which one of you do I get to eat?
