Today I decided it's about time I started one of these WIP's, so here we are :) .

And characteristically I'll start without any actual Work in Progress pictures:

My next project will be Rohan Royal Guard (Aka Riders of Rohan in heavy armour, with a bit wealthier paint work):
Image

And here's what I've finished of late:

An Ent without a hand that I got in an Ebay lot.
Image

Image

And some Wood Elves/Noldorin Scouts:

Comments and tips appreciated (I know the pictures are meh, I'll get some better ones tomorrow or tuesday).

The ent looks good, tough you might want to add some higlights.
What did you use for the elves' faces, It looks like revell.
Try using thin layers for the face, I generally use elf flesh for the first layers and then add a wash of dwarf flesh.
(Or whatever they are called these days, I haven't gone inside a GW store in over a year.)

Looking forward to the finished royal guard.

I like the way you painted the bark/skin on the Ent, it looks good. :D

The elves are good too, but I think their faces are fuzzy :)

I used Italeri Skin Tone, and I know it's cr*p, but it's the only thing I have until I get transport to a GW again, so I'll have to make do...

Thanks for the tip on thinning your paint, though this paint was so liquid it ran off the face the first 2 times.

Thanks Gothmog, and yeah, the elf faces are not what they should be.

Thanks MMS. I'm still wondering why GW didn't make any mini's of them (they are mentioned in Unfinished Tales, they are quite a "logical" choice IMO, and they are the sort of thing GW loves (Folks with big weapons and lots of gore-potential)).

Here are some pictures of my semi-basecoated Royal Guards. The writing is supposed to say "Theoden Cynig", Theoden King, but it's not very legible.

Excellent start on the Rohirrim Telchar although I would like to see a clearer picture of the script on the bottom of the cloak. Try taking the photograph from further away from the model and then using your image editor such as photobucket etc to crop it. Looks great so far tho. Well done!

Cool stuff! The painting looks very good! Funny, I also made one of the Uruk-Hai conversions, the one with the horizontal axe. The other conversion is very cool too!

You should paint the missing hand of the Ent black so that it looks like it was burned, haha! Maybe even sculpt some small flames to add to the fun.

Good work on those Uruk Scouts, the paint job is nice and I know how difficult it is to convert them to hold two-handed weapons. Where did you get the axes from by the way, and what made you decide you wanted them to have axes?

The ent looks nice in natural light, and I like the quivers on the wood elves bows' which I don't remember seeing before.

Good idea on the Rohirrim too, I hate payong ridiculous amounts for the metal /finecast models, good start to these 8)

Thanks for all the compliments!

@ Gothmog: they are Gripping Beast Frankish Fransica's, but not cut to size (they are meant to be one-handed axes with an elongated handle you cut off at the length you want). I was inspired by "The Fords of Isen", from Unfinished Tales, where these are the Uruks that kill Theodred.

EDIT: Here's the pictures I meant to add:

Finished Royal Guard:

And 3 High Elf Swordsmen:

nice painting but if I saw those riders in a game, I would assume they were RoR rather than RRG. It just feels like something else needs to be done to them to differentiate them from normal riders.

I like the colors you used on the elves they work together nicely. Don't know if you noticed but the elf on the far right still has metallic cloth around its shoulders ;)

Thanks! On the RRG/Riders, my normal riders will be quite different (almost no gold, etc), so I hope one will be able to see the difference...

Thank you! I used GW Chainmail, but any "standard" silver-colour will do (I have another 4 painted using Revell metal paint, and you can't see the difference).

Practice makes perfect, I guess :) .

Sorry for the long time without updates, real life and so on, and my computer crashed  .

Heres what I managed:
A conversion of MoM Aragorn to Halbarad (please excuse the horrible attempt at a white tree):
Image

Image

Image

The last High Elves, just prior to basing:
Image

Image

And half a basecoat on some Dwarves I dug up:

I'm afraid I'm having a bit of an attack of Napoleonics-fervour, so this will be the last update for a few weeks, I think.

I use a tiny bit of green stuff to seal the centreline seam on the plastic horses-I do them in batches as each horse only requires a tiny amount on the rump behind the rider and it is impossible to mix a very small quantity properly so I do about 30 at a time, then tidy it up before undercoating the horse.

Greetings,

Firstly, Love the small details such as the gold on the rider cloaks and the elf quivers.

Secondly, the conversions are smashing, the uruks look great!

Thirdly, a small criticism is that the rim of the base looks a tad weak and imo needs another coat - i used to do this all the time and was amazed how an extra coat on its base improved the mini as a whole!

Love the snow on the base - a fine touch.

Lastly, Have you considered sculpting a new ent hand? - they are very simple and would enhance the ent's presence massively!

1&2 Thanks!

3 You're absolutely right, but not counting in my natural laziness  .

Thanks again! It's just super cheap fake snow (gotta love fake christmas stuff) mixed with PVA.

I had considered it, but my sculpting abilities are not quite up to the challenge, I fear. I'll get back to him one day. In fact, when he's on the tabletop, you barely notice.
