I like the flowers on the bases. A very nice touch. Fantastic paint work by both of you. 8)

Right, time for another update as it's been too long.

The painting saga continues in our house as we steadily press on with our forces, we're only aiming for table top standard or else I think we would have gone insane long before now, kudos to you who spend the time to really make the miniatures shine though.

First up we have just discovered the joys of Army Painter Anti-Shine varnish. We have always used Ronseal matte varnish however it was leaving some models a little too shiny (such as the Trolls who looked like they had just taken a swim). Any way, here are the first results of a the blessed anti-shine and may I say I'm rather pleased with the result:

This still leaves everything else to receive a layer of this stuff but I'll do that at the end before adding flock.

Next up is the real update, I've now progressed onto the archers and have switched to using Army Painter Greedy Gold, brilliant match and in my opinion much easier to paint with:

Image

Amy has been continuing with her Gondor forces and is doing rather well with them, you'll notice she's completed some Rangers which are my personal favourites:

Now for a catch up on my Easterling army as a whole, here's what's painted with a close up of the command (which I forgot to do a photo of in the case of the spearmen):

As you can see all the bases have been bought now but again I'll be leaving these till the end.
One last thing I don't believe I have mentioned is that while we are doing all our modeling we have been listening to the Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings audio books (the ring has just fallen to its doom) and it has been brilliant inspiration, next up is The Silmarillion (can't wait to start it).

As always C&C welcome and appreciated

Phil

Thanks :)

One thing I forgot to ask is if anyone knows of a model I can use for a Balrog/Dweller stand-in? Not that there's anything wrong with them but I'm just looking for something different, oh and wings are preferred (I'll post this in miniature help too to cover all bases).

Bilbo of the White Tower used a Warhammer Vampire Counts Varghulf as Gulavar. Maybe you could get one of them.

Amazing Troll, beautiful armies, you have come along way. Suggest that you highlight the golden armour with some silver outlines though. Great job anyway keep it up :)

Those trolls are some of the nicest I've seen. Grey flesh really works and the metals are spot on. Look the look of all those Easterlings together too.

Thanks, I've painted the Trolls as Olog Hai. I must admit that I obviously spent a little more time on these then on the rest of the army but I really enjoyed working on them.

I've tried the silver highlight before and never liked the effect for some reason, I like the warmth of the colours I've used on the Easterlings and I think the silver would take away from that though I may go back later and add a burnished gold highlight to pull the edges up a bit.

I think I might have found my Balrog/Dweller alt, the new Mourngul for Forgeworld. The only thing I'm not overly keen on is the void where a body should be but I think if I fill that space with hamster bedding sprayed black I could create a creature made of shadow and darkness?

Thanks for the compliments. We've managed to pick up a decent camera really cheaply so you might actually start to get some decent photos of the miniatures now.

As it stands I'll be finishing off the Easterling army just before Christmas, then its time to anti-shine varnish them, add some flock to the bases and do the unit bases. I'm hoping to do that during the Christmas hols if not before. Then its on to Black Numenoreans who are more of an elite force so there are less of them to do and I hope to get them done pretty quickly. That would finish off everything I currently have but I have two more parts of the force to come, one is a project X (which I've finally made my mind up on) and another is an additional allied force from the east which I should be getting just after Christmas.
Amy is nearly done with her forces but just needs to pick up a few bits and pieces (musicians, a couple of extra troops to fill out units etc.) and then plans on getting an Ent from Majestic Bear and possible a great Eagle from somewhere as there are a couple of really nice ones from a few different companies.
Once the armies are done its time for some epic battles which I'll now be able to capture on camera :) (though we do have The Hobbit coming up so heaven knows what will be released from that).

Update time, new camera received so here are some try outs - though it was night when they were taken so they are a little too dark but the picture quality is better - with some models you'll be familiar with (not the Trolls again!) and next works in progress .

First up the fully based Trolls and then Dragon Knight and War Priest:

Here are the miniatures I'm currently working on:

Amy is continuing on with the Gondorian army as well as starting work on some characters:

That's all for now, C&C welcome as always

so I may have just missed this buried in the post (but it was an honest mistake if I did), but what paint scheme did you use for your trolls? I like the blue-ish grey look to them

Start off with a black base coat then highlight (or a dry brush would do) with the old foundation grey then wash black. Then its a case of building up the grey by mixing in shadow grey then progressing to using shadow grey with codex grey mixed in and washing black between each layer making sure to only give the back one or maybe to layers to give the hardened skin a darker look. In the end I washed the back two more times to give it an almost black look.
This might not be the easiest way to achieve this look as I was sort of making it up as I went along but the end result is what counts and I'm very happy with that. I was working off a description of the Olog-Hai for these so they actually have red eyes, which doesn't really come across in the photos as they are quite suitable, which signifies Sauron's will within them.
