looks good so far; going to say few things tough.
I think maybe his leggs might use a bit more flesh. They look thin. Or at least from what i can c on the pictures. Maybe adding a thicker layer of cloak can fix that.
If i look at ur hand it only has 3 fingers. Where there should be at least 4.
Ur sculpting is very good tough. Fix those little things and i think u could make it even better then it is now. The sculpting on the clothing and hair is very well done, so i know u can do it :-)

Thanks for the feedback, garmenhord! He actually does have four fingers (haha would have been embarassing if he didn't :P) but the little finger isn't very visible on the photo. And I had the same feelings as you about the legs/cloak so I'll go over them again and thicken them out a bit! Once again, thanks for the constructive advice! :)

So I had a bit of spare time before I could get on with house- and homework, so I did a bit more greenstuffing. I'm slowly becoming an addict haha.

I took Garmenhord's advice and thicked out the cloak around the legs, as well as adding a bit more greenstuff to the little finger on G's right hand. In addition, I added the tassles to G's scarf - easier said than done!

And here's the progress I'm making on my second hill troll:

Image

A rock made out of the surplus green stuff from converting Gandalf and the spear in his left hand. Now he just needs a head and a few random bits and bobs to make him look the part!

I've encountered a bit of a dilemma now, though. It would seem that 'Monsters' will be the topic of next month's painting competition but I can't enter my Monotone_Matt's Misty Mountain Monster Mash, as the entry is limited to one model... so which do I choose?!

curious to c him painted up, the sculpt work looks great, i really like that scarf.
I think u need to take a picture from a different angle to get a good look at those leggs. But as far as i can c it seems perfect now.

Looking great again matt! The eagle and the troll. What do you think about cutting off the smaller blade of the spear to make it look "simpler" and less isengard-ish. Trolls aren't the brightest stars on th sky if you know what I mean, and I guess they would use rather primitive weapons.

Haha thanks a lot Garmenhord, hopefully it's more visible in this final update :)

Thanks Rognarr! I did what you suggested, guter Einwand ;)

Gandalf's finished, hooray! I spent the best part of the weekend working on him and it was quite fun :) my first larger conversion project :yay:

Image

Gandalf's staff needs a head but try as I might, I couldn't sculpt one myself... Gonna have to sacrifice my EfGT-Gandalf :O Also, the staff needs a bit of touching up and filing but basically... finito!

Image

Glamdring's pommel is a smidgen of paperclip and a blob of greenstuff. I copied the EfGT Gandalf's sword harness, too.

Image

Gandalf's right arm is completely scratch built and I'm pleased with how the hand turned out. Just peeping out from under his sleeve is a pouch that I sculpted, too.

Image

Gandalf looks pretty good from behind haha. I like the movement in the scarf; curves are so dynamic :D

So that's it, as I said it took me the whole weekend but I'm very satisfied. Thanks to everyone who offered advice and I'm very open to any tips for future projects!

Simply stunning Matt!
You're improving at a tremendous rate and this is certainly your best mini yet.

The folds in the cloth are very, very good! (especially his right arm!)

The hair is also extremely good!

You never fail to impress me
Stupendous work :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay:

Everyone has to start out somewhere Crucifer and all it takes is a little confidence, perseverance and practice :) Keep at it, you'll be making your own complex conversions in no time! It worked for me after all!

Awesome work Matt! First I thought you put Gandalf a bit too close to the eagles head.. but seeing him finished makes me regret those foolish thoughts! Very impressive!

Haha it would, yes :P It would also be pretty expensive - those Eagles aren't cheap :D

Thanks a lot Rognarr! Well I had similar thoughts originally and I spent a long time looking for some reference material of Gandalf on an Eagle. In Return of the King when he picks Sam and Frodo up off the sides of Mount Doom he seems to be further back, between the wings almost, and sorta kneeling/leaning forward on Gwaihir's back. Seeing as I only had a Khazad-dum Gandalf this pose was sorta out of the question, but when I rewatched the hobbit (online, hehe :P) I kept an eye out to see how he rides the Eagle at the end of the movie and he's sitting pretty much like I modelled him here... Thanks for the kind words, Kumpel! :)

Neither can I! :D I just need to add the staff-head from a spare Gandalf model and he's done :) Thanks for looking in!

I'm afraid you're gonna have to wait a tad longer sticky, he's gonna be my entry for next month's painting competition! :)

Monotone_Matt, you've managed to not make me cringe and curse on seeing Gandalf on an Eagle. That's quite an achievement! :p (I'm a bit overly purist sometimes)

Will you be using it as a scenario-specific/display model or for a normal army?
