Hey all,

I was wondering wether or not i should start picking up the white dwarf magazine? (it's released once per month, right?). I am only interested in LOTR / The hobbit SBG, not really the other war-games, don't have the time to :)

So, is it worth picking up purely for LOTR? or is there just not enough content to justify the costs?

Thanks

Ten years ago, yes.

These days.. not at all. November '12 was the last issue that had a decent amount of LOTR/Hobbit content and I'd hoped that it was setting a new precedence, but it seems that was wrong.

As many have said before, WD is now little more than a glorified catalogue - not a hobby magazine.

Aw okay, thats a shame. I thought that with the new massive amount of releases due to the Hobbit series they would pick it up, but i guess not.

Have there been any LOTR releases recently, or is it "at it's full glory"? They can't keep adding new models since their storyline is already written to completion, where as war hammer is it's own universe and can expand as they see fit. I was wondering if it was a problem in the LOTR aspect of the hobby, or if GW even after 10 years still release LOTR models?

The problem is with GWS and WDs current mindset. They are not using any products except what they sell to make terrain projects with so out goes most of the stuff we have seen before (they dont sell polystyrene :P ) and WD is just a multipage advert now rather than a hobby magazine.

Every time I get a white dwarf (only every now and again) I always think: 'This will be the one when they will care about LoTR/hobbit and do something hobbyish' but every time I am thoroughly disappointed.
As Knighty and Mith have said: it's just a catalogue now. :-X

You'd probably be better off getting some of the 'Battle Games in Middle Earth' magazines from eBay. They are decent magazines, 100% full of LoTR and they usually come with free models. They come with painting guides, how to make your own scenery (to a very good quality I might add) battle reports, scenarios and rules (so basicly everything WD should be).

Also you can find some great fan made things all over the internet such as the Twengar Beacon.

:)

The Battle games in middle earth looks like a nice magazine, is it possible still to buy them. (from the first issue onwards)?

Sadly no. They're out of production now (Although there is a petition here on OR to bring it back...)

eBay is your best bet if you want to get them these days...

Not only on Ebay, look for other similar sites too if you want to get some BGiME issues, Ebay is usually more expensive because it will almost certain be bought, that's why they ask a higher price.

If you only care about the LotR game then no, I really wouldn't get White Dwarf for it. LotR/Hobbit are minor entries compared to 40k and fantasy. Hell, even if you're a warhammer fantasy fan I wouldn't recommend it because I've noticed that 90% of the time, the white dwarf contains far more 40k content than fantasy.

One of the white dwarf issues had some pointers on painting the goblin town terrain (woooo drybrush browns) and the goblins, but that's about it. Generally speaking you won't get much more than a quick preview of what the models look like, as opposed to actual articles about LotR/Hobbit.

Even if you're involved in all three systems (I used to work for GW, so had to be into 40k), it's not worth it. I had a rant about the model quality on CDO, where you can see gaps (this month, it's lines in bloodletter foreheads that a little liquid greenstuff could remove) in models, for example.

It is LITERALLY (having counted several issues now) a third adverts and a third miscellaneous/useless [word deleted]. Then the last third is largely of low quality - this time around, full off filler in the form of Golden Daemon entries...

Totally agree Hashut's Blessing, why has this happened? they must have decided not to cover The Hobbit in anyway.

ALso the painting articles are worst than useless

I sadly agree with all the above comments. There used to be a time where I didn't even look at whats on the cover, I just grabbed copy off the shelf every month.

What really turned it for me (aside from it being a rather unimaginitive catalog) was when they released the new paints. GW is selling the dream that no one has to mix paints anymore, and overnight quality of the models in the magazine just bottomed out. I don't blame the heavy metal team about the low quality of the models, which I think is obvious that they don't care. If you were a professional painter and modeler, and someone reduced your job to paint by numbers, and basing for children, you wouldn't care anymore either....

This sites Feb Monsters competition would sell more models and inspire more people than WD could dream of. Another great job corporate marketing

It might be even worth buying older WD from issue 280 to 330ish they usually have a lot of LotR content.

Some are even available online (not legal of course).

GW did put some articles on their website, but I don't know if they are still available.

The new WD looks pretty though.
And there are usually reviews about WD and if the content is LotR worthy it is always possible to buy it then.

Before GW had the idea of releasing full Middle-earth terrain sets, WD had some awesome terrain guides. I was always in awe of them but never made any. Now that the minis themselves are getting pricier, I think I'll focus on some terrain making.
