Also GW confirmed that there are rules in the box for the men of the dale. Saw it on TLA

Forgeworld does not count. Its a seperate business/subsidiary/arm or whatever; and its always been more expensive. Its also always been far, far better quality than the mainstream GW and in most cases worth the prices.

I'd count Forge World--its products may not be on the GW site, but it is 100% Games Workshop, owned and operated, like the BL. I see FW products in GW stores and I believe its models and rules are legal in GW events.

Quality or not, there's a limit imo to how much a toy soldier or miniature or scale model or wargaming rules set is worth, and Forge World is just way above too expensive, though I'd love to paint up some of those Warhammer Monsters. Main GW is too expensive as it is.

Does anybody have an official quote about the rules being in the box? I'd like to release a statement asap on facebook/twitter to all customers to reassure them about this rules mess-up. Can you believe it that a stockist wasn't given this kind of information and has to find it out himself on the internet?

I asked too and got the same reply:

"Hello Ezra
The rules indeed come in the box for the Warriors of Dale.

Kind regards

Lydia"

Well, my point is that they're not IMO directly comparable.

Different departments, different pricing structure, different casting material, different management, different business strategy, different ethos, different target customer base.

Black Library is run every differently to the main GW business. We don't see BL raising the prices for their novels by several pounds every year, or downsizing the page count of novels to half of what they used to be, and charging 75% of the original full size novel.

Forgeworld was always the more specialised niche, elitist manufacturer, catering more to modellers and players with larger disposable incomes and producing much better quality models (better resin) and rulebooks (Imperial Armour... 'nuff said).

GW was more mainstream, focusing on more mass produced plastic kits and metal models / the crappy type of resin. Their rulebooks and products are geared more to the wargamer demographic, rather than the expert painters and modellers.

My point was GW is going crazy in expense.
As forgeworld is actually a very successful business GW are mimicing with their current stuff.

No argument there...

When I buy from Forgeworld, I usually feel that I'm buying good quality products, that are worth at least 75% of what they charge. (some of the large models, Titans and Thunderhawks are insane though).

Whereas when I buy from GW, I feel like I'm buying poor quality (at least, ever declining quality) mass produced, over hyped Devlan Mud.

Ondoher, I want to disagree with you, but I've never been able to convince myself to pay what Forge World is charging--thus, I've never purchased or received anything from FW but a free catalogue. But from the website pictures and videos I've seen, FW does not seem so much better than "regular" GW so as to justify the prices that are being charged. They are outlandish, and even if I ended up buying a model I wanted (like the Preyton), I don't think I could ever convince myself that I got my money's worth, even if I would love the model.

FW is above and beyond ridiculous, and regular GW is already at that point as well--nothing from GW is worth anything close to what it's asking. There is a huge disparity between the price tag and the inherent value of the toy soldiers GW is pushing. But I do suppose that GW and FW and not directly comparable--I just don't think it's fair to say FW "doesn't count" when it's still GW behind the banner, just overcharging and milking.

I suppose you're right. I've just recalled that I havn't made many purchases from Forgeworld, just the Raven Guard Captain Korvydae for ~£12 and the Raven Guard transfer sheet for ~£12...

So I retract my point that Forgeworld is better value for money.

I guess I have a generally better overall impression of Forgeworld than I do of the main GW department. Forgeworld is definately far better quality, whether the prices are fair or not.

Forge world products also dont lose there value, over the last few weeks I have sold a lot of high value FW items such as the Empire Land Ship, painted, and made some really good money on them.

Have always found FW to be better quality, and now looking at FW prices on some similar WH items they are cheaper

I started playing Warhammer Fantasy in 2000. Elite troops were $35/$40 then for a box of 10 metal models with no options or extra bits.

The current LotR plastics are much better than those were, both in terms of quality and options/flexibility.

Would I rather be able to get these models for $1 a model? Sure. But, I don't have a problem paying $3-$4 a model if I like the sculpts and have a use for the troops.

I realize these prices are out of the range of what's affordable for many. I also realize the models for SBG have gone up exponently in price compared to 2001. I'm just pointing out that the current plastics aren't any more expensive than WHF was 12 years ago.

$40 for a character on foot and mounted is a bit much though and I have yet to buy any of those sets. I'd like to get Yazneg, but can't justify the cost especially when Azog will likely be $50-$60 for FineCast two pack.

Metal vs plastic is an unfair comparison, as metal costs a lot more to mold and produce. Add to that the fact that the metal sets were done (as opposed to plastic ones being done) because they knew they would sell less and thus made fewer.

As an aside, is there a single "best selling" WFB army? I know Space Marines of various flavours are the "flagship force" of 40K, but I'm not sure whether there's one dominating favourite in Fantasy.

For me, I value the models based on asthetics, usefulness, and the material. Plastic is far and away my favorite material to work with, both for durability, easy of conversion, and easy of assembly. Paint also won't chip off it if you drop it (like it will with metal). Finecast is pretty poor quality material, but I'd prefer it to metal for large models such as drakes, eagles, ents, etc.

I really could care less what it costs GW to produce a model. I wouldn't buy a model I don't like regardless of how low GWs margin is, likewise I'd be much more inclined to buy something I like even if it's overpriced. I am really excited (despite the price) about Men of Dale as they are fantastic models, albeit without rules (currently).

I'd say Chaos of all forms is WHF top selling army, but I don't have anything to back that up other than the frequency which GW releases stuff for those armies.

As for the new prices, did anyone notice the price of the new Chaos heralds? The Herald of Nurgle is the same price as Bolg and they look about the same size, but the herald is plastic. He also is substantially cheaper in game, so Bolg is a much better deal. Not saying that $25 is a good price for Bolg, just pointing out that it could be a lot worse.

Yes, the new Chaos releases have set the price bar higher than ever, especially for large kits and characters. The only character I've purchased for Hobbit SBG is Bolg (I will buy Thror as the model is brilliant).

The sculpt of Bolg is great but I had numerous issues with the resin casting. I really wish they'd go 100% plastic, which is rumoured to be happening over the next few years.

With the quality of the limited edition radagast, I'd much prefer plastic heroes over 'fine'cast ones.

Aye, the limited edition Radagast is fantastic except for the pose. Even these plastic single Heroes are getting up there though - $20-$25Cdn a piece!
