So before I go and start my Durin's Folk army, I would like to know what you guys think of this tester army list. I don't have the points cost in here because I don't have the "Free Peoples" book yet. The theme of this army is, "Thorin Oakenshield" will be the leader of the army and allies of normal dwarfs helping him.

Warband 1

Thorin Oakenshield
x9 Grimhammers

Warband 2

Dwarf King shield
x7 dwarf warriors x7 shields
x5 Dwarf rangers x5 bows

Warband 3

King Dain
x3 Khazad guard
x4 dwarf warriors x4 shields
x5 Dwarf rangers x5 bows

All input is welcome. Please tell me any recommendations that you may have.
Thank You
:gandalf: from the north pole. That's why his rhymes are so cold.

Can't really help with Dwarves, sorry, but...the GrimHammers aren't in the Free People's book, they're only in the Hobbit rulebook. Maybe you know this, just didn't want you disappointed :)

Yeah Grimhammers are from a separate army (and rulebook) and thus a separate bow contingent, so the list is illegal :(

However - I feel you have the right idea, that said, there are a few things I'd do different:

•Take Balin, son of Fundin, instead of the king - same points but better in every
way!
•Don't bother with rangers with bows, they may be more likely to hit but the
regular archers have higher strength bows, and more defence (and are cheaper)
•It gets said alot, but don't take Dain, for 10 points less you get the kings
champion, who has a higher fight value, and like 70 points worth of free banners

Balin, son of Funding with Durin's Axe - infinitely one of the best choices available. That special axe and named character stat line is way better than the +1D of the generic King with shield. Trust me.

I'd have to disagree with SuicidalMarsBar: Keep Dwarf Rangers with Dwarf Longbows over Dwarf Warriors with Dwarf Bows - the extra accuracy and range means you have more wounds to do before they reach you and the Defence will only come into it in combat - where you should have Grimhammers etc fighting instead. The extra pip of strength on the shooting isn't all that useful either. Someone actually did some Mathhammer and the Rangers fared far better, but experience tells me the same anyway.

You need to switch some equpment around as well - 8 Rangers and 16 Warriors with shield/Khazad Guard (with the Guard, keep them hidden as well - people would rather shoot them than the shield guys because they're both as difficult to kill as each other, but the Khazads are supposed to do more damage in combat and so considered mroe of a threat).

I quite like Dain, myself, but the facts are that you can have 3 D9 models for 10pts less with re-rolls in Duels, more Fate etc etc. You'd have to drop two shield-dwarfs, but you can add in more Grimmies.

If you have spare points, skim a few elsewhere and take a captain/cheap The Hobbit hero.

@Bilbo that is true, but dwarves have good enough courage anyway, and more importantly - Durin comes with a free horn.

Somewhat dimly, I had never noticed that. just the terror bit! If he's still alive and can make a stand fast, no ones going anywhere!

I'd recommend against the Grim Hammers. And there's a very simple reason why. Of all the Dwarf "elites" (Khazad Guard, Iron Guard, Grims, Vault Wardens) they are by far the worst. They have only 6 def (Like the Iron Guard) but unlike the other 3 they only have 3 strength, and only the single attack. I know some people would argue the throwing weapon makes them equal to the Khazad, but the greater str, def and bodyguard of the Khazad are far better.

The list is not actually an illegal list. I would take Thorin and his Grimhammers from the separate army as an ally.

Yes it is...your durins folk contingent is over bow limit. You have 15 models without bows, 10 models with. If my limited maths serves me well, 25/3 isnt 10. (calculator says 8.3 therefore you may only take 9 warriors (not heroes) with bows). That is what SM was on about.

Oops... Sorry about that I thought you were talking about the Thorin and Grimhammers contingent being illegal.

Warband 2

Balin

Drop a grimhammer and take Durin's Axe on Balin. The axe is better than a single Grimhammer will be, guaranteed.

Balin becomes immensely more effective (no -1 to the duel roll and he has a personal banner) and becomes even more of a fearsome opponent (dictates your opponents moves a little).
