Interesting, that would be very cool. as well as develop the Necromancer as an unearthly master of foul puppets. Particularly when they are seriously dangerous like Bolg! Sauron has always suffered from lack of characterisation which this could solve!

That exactly ist what I think!

If the Elves do besiege Dol Guldor I hope they don't have siege equipment. Just wouldn't really fit I think. I always liked BFME giving them Ents in that capacity, just "felt right"

I'm thinking the White Council will tear apart the fortress with their magics

I think this is a great idea, one of the (many) problems with a direct translation of the books is that the dwarves never actually have a showdown with Smaug. They walk all this way and then sit on the side of a mountain whilst someone else sorts out their problems for them. It's yet another example of the dwarves being incredibly passive and having very little impact on the plot. It sounds to me like they've changed the story so that the dwarves will actually have a fight/encounter with Smaug that gives some form of satisfying climax to the movie before he flies off in a rage and the events at laketown play out as they do in the book. Who knows, perhaps the dwarves are actually able to drive Smaug out of the mountain and reclaim Erebor, that would certainly be a more satisfying narrative than what happens in the book and would give them more of a sense of reclaiming their homeland.

As for PJ deviating for the book - Good. However much people might not like Azog and Radagast the changes that he's made to the dwarves alone entirely justify his actions, transformed as they are from a bumbling group of moody cowards into a heroic band of warriors. IMO PJ and his team have done a damn fine job so far and I trust them to continue to do so in the next movie.

Well said.

Yes, but wasn't that during the War of the Ring, ? In fact I know it was so I don't know why I'm asking.

That was definitely in the War of the Ring.

Lady Galadriel going into battle transformed as she showed herself to Frodo at the Mirror - now that would be marvellous. Poo your pants time for the orcses, methinks.

It would be awesome if we got a "re-do" of the gates getting smashed open at Mina's tirith but the roles are reversed, and it's Galadriel instead of trolls :D

What is most on my mind, is why Bolg is apparently killed by Dwalin. But he will appear in film 2!!

Hi MeatBoy,

Bolg is shown getting beaten up and without the metal brace holding his skull together, which leads us to the presumption that he is seriously wounded, treated in a crude scary looking orcish way, and then recovers. Probably left a bit mental as a result (In a Megatron becomes Galvatron manner!).

I like how you think! This does seem the most accepted reason, but there is also the rumor that the Necromancer can actually revive the dead... hmm...

In a thread somewhere hidden within the bowels of One Ring I mentioned that I thought that Bolg looked undead.
Everyone said to me, no that is not true, it is just his armor etc. etc.

Well we will see in the coming film!

I still think he's just undergone some basic orc surgery like Azog. I think the Necromancer 'summoning the dead' thing is more having power over spirits (like the Nazgul) than creating an army of zombie orcs.

Just my opinion though, as Imrail says we shall see come December!

The metal strips on Bolgs face are probably and indication that he survives Dwalins wallops, and presumably fixes himself up!

Sounds like this movie is going to be action packed.

I have to say, I don't like what I'm hearing about the dwarves 'laying siege to Smaug's Lair' but I'll live. As long as it's Bard who does the most important thingy.

Looking forward to it!

There are two Middle Earth's - the PJ One of the films and the one of the books. I don't see a reason why we can't have and enjoy both :-)

I know purists might object - but it was always said that LOTR could never be filmed and it wasn't. Instead we had a version of events that unfolded in LOTR that worked well as a set of movies. The Hobbit will be no different and with the extra necromancer angle it adds a whole new level to the story.

Looking forward to Xmas :-)

P.S - I'm not white - I'm green ;-)
