@ garmenhord: thanks! The Boromir conversion was really obvious to me, but I realised that I hadn't seen it anywhere! I even like the pose better than the original model.

@ Oldman Willow: yeah, they would, but they are pretty small. Just some 20mm or less. The War of the Ring board game is great, I can really recommend it!

@ Dorthonion: thanks! I haven't seen it anywhere either, but the conversion pretty 'logical' to me, so to say. Can't show more WIP pictures I'm afraid, because I haven't worked on him since. I'll be able to work on him earliest in one and a half week. First some papers and finals!

@ Raukov: thanks mate. The different scale is a joy to work with. Though painting (and converting) is very hard at the scale, there are less details you have to worry about. No buckles, nails, eyes or whatever. If anything, it's at least different and makes for a nice change from painting 28mm!
Also, I can really recommend running a map campaign. If you need tips, send me a PM, I will give you some rules and ideas if you like.

It's fantastic board game, one of the best I've played. The minis are soft plastic, and therefore the detail on them is not as good as we're used to. But, it's still very decent on most of them and painting them makes a huge difference (they are solid red, blue, grey and silver out of the box).

I actually prefer the 15 mm miniatures. You can have bigger armies for less time and money

Thanks a lot! Smaller scales have huge advantage indeed. They are cheaper and blocks of men will just make the battle look like a real battle (and not just a skirmish). But for now I'll mostly stick to 28mm, much more detail!

Anyway, I'm back with an update. Since I have summer break now, I have lots of time, so expect some more updates in the next few weeks.

Here are some of my Axemen. They are Varangian Guard in full armour, made by Crusader Miniatures. They were very close to how I envisioned the Axemen of Lossarnach from the books, so I will be using them as that (and in a Byzantine Warband for SAGA).

The minis are great. The cast are very good (the chain mail is good in all places), mould lines are minimal and the sculpts themselves are great too. They paint up very easily too (the chain mail is a joy to paint: so quick!). And that at a price lower than that of new GW plastics!

I added lots of flowers to the bases because Lossarnach was famous for its flowery vales. It also helps them stand out and look less dull with all the metal colours. Loss is Quenya for snow and therefore I added especially many white flowers.
I'll only have to make the banner (oh yeah, and paint 9 more axemen) and the group is done! For the emblem of Lossarnach I was thinking about a white flower on a blue(or black?) field, with the White Tree of Gondor on the edge somewhere.

I'm also working on a Harad board. Made it yesterday, will paint it tomorrow. And then come the separate terrain features...

He is indeed stronger than you might expect, but this is because I've made House Rules for many Warriors and Heroes to represent them closer to the books. In these rules, I want Orcs (S3) to be generally weaker than Men (S4) and Uruks (S4).
My opponent agrees with me on this, and we like to represent our games as close to the books as possible, as we see it.

@ Harfoot: thanks. Yeah, trying to stay close to the book (and filling in unknown details) is one of the joys of this hobby to me. That's also why I make all those House Rules, as mentioned above.


Up next will be an update on my new Harad board. I finished it a few days ago, and I'm working on terrain to put on it (sand dunes, thorn bushes, rocks etc).

Great looking axe-men. I got a load of the metals from a Spanish company - here is a link with an image of their painted versions:

@ Gandalf the Grey: thanks! The men of Lossarnach seemed to me to be one of the most uniform contingents of the Fiefs that arrived at Minas Tirith (save Dol Amroth).

Nice miniatures and very well painted, they'll fit in well with the LOTR range.

@ Crucium Giger: thanks! I thought they fit in very well too. In fact, there are so many historical minis that fit in great (sometimes even better than GW models, in my opinion).

@ Telchar: thanks! The flower where made from painted flock. They are in fact pretty easy to make.
First, apply wood glue and add long grass (or use grass tufts). When the tufts are done, mix flock with some bright colour of paint (whatever colour you like). Get a bit of the paint-flock mix to a brush and try to get single coloured flock pieces on the top of the long grass. This should stick fairly well. When dried, you can highlight the flowers.
Pretty simple, and great fun to do actually! I could make an article of it actually, if people are interested.

Another update, with quite some new work.

I also made a Harad table last week. I had the wooden board laying around for 2 years now, I think, but I finally got around to adding sand and painting it.

Lots of work remains to be done to make the board a bit full. I got lots of plans and hope to be able to make most of them this summer break.

I love the scenery pieces, great choice of colours for the rocks.
