Hi all, lately I've been getting into a few scenery themes. Ships and galleys (due to the latest Assassins Creed ) and tents and camping items.

I'm not particularly the person to do camping myself, but it does seem fun and I'd like to try it. I want to create some camp items (bedrolls, campfires and pots and what else) for my gaming boards. I've been thinking of creating Orc camps, and Gondorian camps and had the idea of including watchtowers for them.

What I want to know is, what can I add to my campsite? I've obviously got the tents and fire pits, and sculpted myself some bedrolls and other than a watchtower, what else can I add? Is there anything I could add inside the tents for detail, as I've made a few where you can remove the top.

Any help given will be greatly appreciated, and I may post my progress in the forums as well as my latest sculpting project

As for ideas, what about some tables with food and cooking equipment on? possible all underneath a cooks tent

There's a lot of interesting modelling ideas contained in that picture - barrels around the back of the sleeping area, a map laid out on a rough-hewn table, fish and meat roasting over an open fire and tree stumps and rocks being used for seats.

I don't own them myself but they look decent and they do sell variations of that set if you prefer a specific type of tent.

Maybe some rough-looking fences/stakes driven into the ground that the camp's owners set up as defenses?

First you need to define what sort of level of campsite is it that you're seeking. Is it the overnight stop for a bunch of Ithilien rangers sneaking about the place or an elaborate command tent area for a harad King as he slowly makes his way to Mordor? The former will be a few blanket rolls and maybe a subtle campfire while the latter will have huge, ornate tents, stacks of spears for the guards, a cooking area, tents for bodyguards, the King's banner, and so on.

Anything that doesn't act as cover and/or an obstacle should be put lower down the list to obtain, since it's game effects that matter most. Renedra do a nice range of plastic tents (and some campsite items as well), which you might consider if only for templates to make your own. Piled baggage is always good - backpacks and blanket rolls for light troops, barrels and crates for larger contingents. Tethered horses or mules might make an objective as well as an obstacle. A small pen of wooden stakes or wattle fencing could contain beef on the hoof - cattle to feed the troops. Piles of firewood are always easy to obtain and prepare, with maybe some tree trunks sawn flat to provide somewhere to sit. A few sticks with rope between might provide a washing line or somewhere for blankets to air, depending on how long they're camped for. Small watch fires might lie out on the periphery to detect incoming enemies without disclosing the centre of the camp. A prominent flag stand - possibly even on the back of a cart - would tell the army where the commanding general is, and lesser flags might denote nobles, sub-commanders, visitors, etc. A few slaves or prisoners might be sitting forlornly in a cage or stockade nearby. Wagons and carts - emptied of supplies overnight - are great to fight over, especially if they form part of a defensive laager. Portable tables would generally be crude affairs - planks laid across folding trestles - and there would be stools rather than chairs for portable comfort. Blankets or rough benches might supply somewhere for officers to sit while receiving briefings. A Shaman or War Priest might have a portable altar for their evil rituals while Good troops might have a small shrine with them.

Could be a bit late with this but I would recommend BGiME issue 73 for some good tips on making a table with food/cups/goblets/jugs on it. It has some good ideas there
