I also strongly doubt they'll ever combine the two ranges, unify them or revisit them again. Beyond the IP issues I don't think GW has any interest in developing the game, you just have to look at White Dwarf, there hasn't been a single article about SBG since the December issue. As lovely as it would be to have a unified 'Battles Of Middle Earth SBG' in 4 years time I think it's far more likely that that whole range will just sit on a website for a few years until the license expires and they quietly remove it.

The two ranges are combined, it specifically states that in the rule book. The only reason its labelled 'the Hobbit' is because that label is more recognisable than LOTR is. When War of the Ring came out there was nothing but War of the Ring for a couple of years (and every one was saying that SBG was going to be dropped, but it wasn't...) because they need to promote it and that's what they are doing with the Hobbit. I know they don't promote as much as we'd all like them to do, but all of your pessimistic stances claiming that the game will be dropped in 2017 is rather overblown negativity. Who knows what the game will be like in 4 years time. People were saying the EXACT same thing after the LOTR films were finished yet here we are. Who knows what more Tolkien films could be made in the future. In 2005, it certainly looked like the Hobbit would never be made, but after delays and red tape it was. People should not be negative for the sake of being negative.

Good call Sticky F,

I suspect that we will see a lot more miniatures with the forth coming film as it is much more action packed, in a way that we didn't see in the first film. I suspect that this will really boost sales. I still feel that the range is far too popular to get dropped, and there are too many people still wanting LOTR miniatures for it to disappear.

I hope that never happens!!! Silmarillion is not movie material!

I think you might have misunderstood my point, I'm well aware the ranges are combined/one game, you're quite right about what the rulebook says. When I said combine the two ranges I meant under one banner, no more Hobbit of LOTR but just 'Battle Game in Middle Earth' or similar. That's what I don't think is likely to happen.

 Hah, well this is new, this has gotta be the first time I've been accused of negativity on this forum, I'm normally accused of being an overly forgiving GW fanboy!

It's not overblown negativity at all and I'm certainly not being negative for the sake of it. I'm a massive fan of the game, the rules and the models but I'm simply stating what I think is a realistic chain of events based on GW's recent moves. The simple fact is White Dwarf/GW's website don't support the Hobbit. As a result of that, new gamers aren't exposed to the game, don't get into the system and so they don't attend GW's tournaments. As a result of that GW see the game as unpopular and don't support it in White Dwarf/the website and so the cycle goes on. You just have to look at how many Limited Edition starter sets there still are in every GW to see that the range has massively under performed. I'm afraid I don't agree that drawing reasonable conclusions (that may well be wrong) from the available evidence is overblown negativity.

Do I still think SBG will be around and flourishing in 2018? No. However, I may well be wrong in which case I will be very happy indeed.

I don't mean to be negative but rather think it would be realistic in the case a new film doesn't get made.. It is well know the HOBBIT/LOTR SBG doesnt stand a chance if the popularity of that fantasy world doesn't get fed. Before the bobbit was made the LOTR range was as good as dying if you ask me. Because GW can't make any other 'sale boosting' models that are not mentioned in the book of film the possibilities of the LOTR/HOBBIT range is limited. As I dont think it likely they will make a new LOTR film which is just as popular as the other trilogies, GW will slowly fade the range into a bliss...

I hope it never happens but logic tells me otherwise. :(

Sad to say Lorindol that I think you are right :-(

But on a positive, another company always, as in the past, picked up the licence to make 28mm lotr miniatures :-)

Well, from the top of my head, Harlequin Minatures made a range , don't forget Knight Minatures are just getting some figures out in 30mm

Anyone know any more?

Personally i prefer the skill of Michael Perry and Alan Perry , if someone picks up the license from G.W after 2017 they have to produce high quality models NOT crappy rip off ones like Harlequin and citadel ME 80 [word deleted].

You mean the mini catapult?
As a lego fan i can tell you that that´s added by lego.
they often add that where it doesn´t belong. far too often.

Is this the first time we've seen Beorn? Because I think he looks kinda awesome, though I wonder why he's at Dol Guldur (If he even is, Lego like to warp the plot a bit for their sets).

I really do hope that Beorn at Dol Guldur is just a Lego thing. Having him appear at the BoFA is going to be very exciting *IF* we have never really seen him in action yet. If he's at Dol Guldur first and then shows up at the Battle I think it's just going to feel less impressive.
