No no no this isn't happening, this pretty much confirms that Bolg is getting a new design. What a shame!

He was Bolg in the credits, at least in the cinema. Will have to check the EE DVD. Pity, I liked the design a lot. At least the model itself is sticking around.

I personally thought that Bolg looks pretty intimidating, arguably more so than Azog, however his original design may well have been dropped in favour of a much better design as with Azog and his first incarnation that became Yazneg!

It's made pretty clear in the AUJ extended edition extas that the Bolg mini's design was in fact the first incarnation of Azog and Yazneg was in fact the second incarnation. The latest production diary implies that the Bolg character has now been replaced with a CGI character similar to Azog. Full details in the thread below:

Shame that we never got to see Bolg in action. Loving the new releases though.

This is wonderful indeed. Very generous of GW.

Did everyone else get a PDF that is two copies long? My poor iPad had a heart attack when I tried to load it into iBooks.

Interesting that Bolg is still listed as Bolg in the profiles. I would have thought if they were producing a mini journey book for AUJ, they might have changed his bio.

I don't own the big book, so I have no idea if these pages are the same as the profile pages in that.

When I opened it, it also had two complete copies. I got so excited too, thinking they might have put another load of rules up!

I have written to GW to thank them, and ask if the file can be fixed.

I felt it was important to let GW know that it was appreciated, as I'm normally writing to complain about Finecast and prices... :yay:

If they could just go back to adding home made hobby projects into the sourcebooks that don't require buying their scenery and I'd be a happy camper indeed! 8)

I did cave in and buy the iPad White Dwarf for December. There is a lot of great photo reference in the new releases section and the paint splatter section covers the Guardsmen and Rangers. I liked the paintwork on the guardsmen and there are some great ideas for making their armour really pop.

Yep, I sent them an appreciative e-mail as well. Maybe positive feedback will encourage them to do similar things in the future. :)

Mixed feelings about the latest release.

Great news that so many miniatures have been released...I was expecting maybe 4 releases (1 troop & 3 captains/named characters) but we have 11 releases with way more models included.

I think the barrels are great sculpts...but I can't see myself spending that much on them for just the one scenario.

Legolas is just god awful...I realise its a new series etc. but I honestly think they should have given us something else rather than him...we already have some pretty cool legolas sculpts that are way better than dopy mc'flat face.

Also I would prefer if we didn't get any more Bilbo/Gandalf sculpts...we have tons of them from the last film alone....Give us the dwarves or new characters!

Palace guards in my opinion also look really awful...

Thranduil however looks pretty badass and shall be added to my council of elven hero's!

I just received a response from GW to my question regarding the 'resin' figures listed without being specifically named as Finecast.
Quote:
New Plastic models
Palace Guards - 99121463005
Mirkwood Rangers - 99121463006
Legolas Greenleaf - 99071463001
Tauriel - 99071463002

New Citadel Finecast models
Barrels out of Bond - 99811499018
Mirkwood Spiders - 99811466023
Palace Guards Captains - 99801463013
Mirkwood Rangers Captains - 99801463012
Thranduil, King of Mirkwood - 99801463009
Beorn - 99801499013
Thrain the Broken - 99801465017

To sum up, resin always means Finecast. There is no new resin medium being used.

Whilst there's bound to be one or two I don't think we'll be overburdened now. I'm pretty sure the Bilbo/Gandalf Clampack is the sculpts from the Mirkwood section of the film, Bilbo's jumping a tree-stump and holding Sting and Gandalf's crouched pose looks perhaps like he's creeping through Dol Guldur. I reckon those sculpts were just released a little early because they didn't give anything away about the next film.

@ Creaky - Great analysis of the potential scenarios, I think you could well be pretty close with some of those. The new WD lists one of them as 'Barrels out of Bond Part 1' so I think we can assume there might be two Barrel scenarios. There's also one definitely one of Bilbo rescuing the dwarves from spider webs so that's 3 of them sorted. The three-part scenario is the battle of Dimril Dale so that only leaves 2 others to account for. I would guess one might be another spider-themed one (either dwarves v spiders pre-capture or elves v spiders post capture) and you'd have to assume that the last would be something Dol Guldur related. Again leaving relatively little room to fit in anything related to either Laketown or the Lonely Mountain.

That leaping Bilbo seems to be equipped with various drinks bottles that at the moment make no sense to the AUJ, but probably represent him sneaking the Dwarves water etc in a scene from the DOS!

I have just noticed that the Mirkwood Palace Guards with spears also have Elven Blades! Potentially allowing to really put the boot in when several are working together or surrounding an enemy. Its not a weapon combination that I have encountered at all so far!

Also I wonder if Gollum in his coracle can be used in the "Barrels out of Bond" scenario? Tough I suspect that this is highly unlikely!

If they keep it true to the book, these should be the supplies that Beorn gave the company before entering Mirkwood.

Perhaps it's a nod to there being some reference to the black stream in the movie. Not that I want to see a series of scenes with Bombur asleep, but referencing its dangers in passing would be nice.

That storyline has definitely been filmed. Not sure how much will make it into the theatrical cut but there's a shot of the dwarves carrying Bombur on a bier through Mirkwood in one of the production diaries.

Feeling decidedly 'meh' about every model shown to be honest.

The above link to an image of Smaug shows him with wings forward suggestive of a Wyvern type dragon with claws on his wings, resting in the same manner as a bat would when on the ground.

The Smaug image is being discussed in a different thread:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=26910

Per the OP, can we keep this thread about the GW models release please?
