Help! My friend and I are going to battle in some ruins and he is evil. I know I have 12 Grim Hammers and 12 Dwarf Rangers, though I might be forced to use my Faramir-led Gondor force or my Rohan force led by Theodred. I'm wondering how to defend ruins with Dwarves- just general tips to fend off a big army. Point Values is 250. I know he is cheap but big so things like Goblins and Orcs are going to make up the primary force. Any ideas?

First of all: convert those grimhammers into erebor warriors if you can.

Defending with dwarves shouldn't be too hard, block off the small passages with your cost effective heroes, give them spear support and don't be afraid to make a push so you can flank the attacker

I can barely paint Moria Goblins with the instruction pamphlet, not to mention conversions! And I am no man for placeholders; it just bugs me. However, I think I can make them work with their throwing weapons while charging.

First of all, hello!

If you like the look of the Grimhammers, then go for it, why not :) Still a defence 6 warrior… Just try support them with a spear and use the two handed weapon to get your kills.

With regards to defending ruins, should suit a small, hard to crack dwarven force, just try and get some spear support in there :)

Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Perhaps I can post a battle report, but it won't be that big of a fight. He thinks he is a master tactician from Warhammer 40k, but I want to prove him wrong! :D

Quick question can you do that and still have them tournamant legal?

How about to old dwarf warriors or only from the same army because its a new set?

Grimhammers are NOT bad by any means. People just say they are because they (like everything else ever) can't compare to Khazad Guards.

That's a contradiction lol 40k requires very little tactical prowess is so unbalanced.

They are weak compared to KG but they also are too many points as they have to take throwing weapons, just not really worth taking the throwing weapons

They aren't spammable, but really only goblins and orcs should be. A single warband can easily earn back their points using their throwing weapons.

I'm just waiting for the day a grim hammer list comes and wins some major tournament just to prove us wrong and make us believe they can work.

Yep, people on tournaments actually really like your conversions most of the time. I even believe one of this forum's youtubers made a video about them

Grimhammers are a perfectly viable choice and are completely fairly costed, a lot of players just don't like having to pay for throwing weapons. Think of it this way, if you have 10 Grimhammers you've paid 20 points for their throwing weapons. That means that if you kill 3 Hunter orcs they more than make their points back. Lets assume that you have priority and your 10 Grimhammers all charge and throw their weapons, 3/4 should hit and 1 should safely kill per turn. Obviously they won't all charge every turn but you can see how easy it is for TW to make their points back. This also doesn't take into account the extra special hits that wound heroes, monsters and other tough targets (I've seen a throwing weapon kill a Ringwraith more than once). They've certainly taken a small hit with the -1 to hit when moving but they're still more than viable, in every game I use them they comfortably make their points back and often vastly exceed them.

In addition, if you're playing against orcs and goblins most of the attacks coming your way will be S3 so you don't need the D7 of WOE as D6 is just as good. You'll suffer against the S2 shooting of orcs/goblins but they'll probably be hitting on 6s anyway so it wouldn't be too much of a problem.

Grimhammers are certainly not the best troops in the game but they'll be more than good enough for your needs.
