Personally I use picture hanging wire. It's cheap, flexible, and easy to find

You can use anything Steve. I quite often just unbend a paperclip and use that

Anything goes - depends on the size of what you are doing. I'd use a paperclip but the ones I have are all impossible to bend. I ended up getting a roll of .7 wire I think, but going smaller wouldn't hurt. For the big guys like ents any kind of fencing wire is fine also. I think green garden wire tends to be a popular choice, but it doesn't really matter as long as you can bend it to the shape you want and its able to hold that shape for the most part while you add putty.
