I think you have improved the eyes to no end, the GW version looks like he's been stung by a bee or eaten some nuts (maybe even both). Job well done

Agreed- I really like him. He's a characterful model, but lately GW paint jobs for the SBG are dodgy at best. Why do they all look cross eyed!

Great job on Alfrid. I really can hear him plotting Bard's demise as I look at him.

Very nice work. Alfred almost has a Steampunk look about him but I love your painting.

As promised, next up is Bard (albeit a few days later than planned!). I really enjoyed painting him, lovely figure in a very dynamic pose. The face sculpt was a bit iffy and doesn't look too much like Luke Evans but I still love the figure and can't wait to get him on the table!

I was going to paint Bofur next (at long last - he's the only member of the company left to do and I painted the first one 6 months ago!) but he got bumped down the queue again! He must be getting a complex by now :-D

I'm heading to the Mansfield tournament at the weekend with a Hobbit themed all-hero Good army and found myself with 5 points to spare. A quick dig around in my bits box revealed an ancient, non-GW, pony I acquired about 15-20 years ago. Thus began a fairly deranged plan on Monday evening to bring Thorin on pony to the tournament. I got the conversion done on Monday night, it's not amazing but I'm pretty happy with it - think it'll do the job, and managed to get him based and shaded last night. Highlights tonight and tomorrow evening and then he'll have to be done. There's no avoiding it's a big ask at the rate I paint but I'll see what I can do!

Looking forward to seeing the Thorin on pony finished. Its not a model I expected to see.

Very nicely done with Bard. The coat is always going to be an awkward one to paint as it seems to change colour slightly depending on how scenes were lit in the movie.
The thing about the hero or named character sculpts is that we sometimes have a bit of overexpectation regarding their resemblance to the screen actor. Now, I have to say that GW have managed to do a lot of excellent work so far, with the dwarves and others, and after all, we are looking at a mini in 28mm scale. Luke Evans face is wider than the mini rendition (maybe a talented sculptor could come up with a replacement option?)

Great work on Bard. He looks as earthy, weathered and muted as he should and that shading is wonderfully smooth. I'm beginning to consider sculpting a little extra fat on his face myself as it is just too gaunt for my liking. It's the only mini so far that has felt truly 'off' so far in the likeness stakes. A shame given how nice a sculpt it is otherwise.

Bard looks great. smooth color. Looks every bit the film character, Hopefully the next film he will look every bit a descendent of the rulers of Dale, until then our trench coat fashion pseudo barge ferryman leader will suffice.

Funny, Bofur is the only dwarf I painted so far.

Yeah I think you're right, given the scale of the models the resemblance to the actors in both the LOTR and the Hobbit ranges has been staggering. The Thorin's Company plastics are amazing likenesses and Thranduil & Beorn have really impressed me recently. I guess it's just once you set such high standards you expect all of them to match it. The Bard model is still gorgeous though.

I haven't quite got an update today but I do have a picture to share that's related to the continuation of my WIP. I've never been particularly fussed about Valentine's Day but these 'flowers' that my Wife just presented me with may well swing all that!

I'm one very happy Nerd tonight! :-D

Bard is excellent. Very natural palette of browns that all look distinct from one another. Pretty hard to do that.

Thanks for the kind words, glad you all liked the 'flowers', Nick Bayton (Warhammer World Events Manager) pinched it from the GBHL page and stuck it up on the WW Facebook Page! So far it's had over 300 likes! Mrs G is very proud of herself!

Update time! I was hoping to get the Thorin on Pony pics up last week but just got crunched at the end getting ready for the Mansfield tournament (which was AWESOME!). Still, good things to all who wait and all that!

I'm pleased with how he came out, particularly given he was conceived, converted, painted and based in 4 evenings. He's not perfect (the high contrast highlighting on the pony's body and head doesn't look that extreme in the flesh) but he certainly did the job and it was good to find a use for that poor pony who's been unloved and ignored for 15 years!

Really glad I got him done as he was an absolute BEAST for me over the weekend! :-D

The pony transformed Thorin from a defensive tank into an aggressive monster and seeing him charging into all and sundry and wiping the floor with them was great sight! How did my army get on? Well you'll have to wait for the first of 2014's 'Dr Grant's Adventures in...' series to find out - should have the full tournament report up sometime this week.

Next up - finally, definitely, absolutely, probably, possibly - is the long-delayed Bofur to complete my Thorin's Company, will the brush finally make it to the poor, unloved dwarf? We shall see...

Love the thorin work, good luck & have fun at the tournament. A cloak would do really well on him if you get the time - or some extra baggage.
