Fixing Miniatures to Slate Bases

Having made up some bases from slate, filler and 1.5mm ply I was wondering about fixing miniatures to them. For small and plastic miniatures I'm sure two-part epoxy will be more than adequate, however for larger metal miniatures (especially those with small feet, and where the slate is uneven) such as trolls and wargs will this be sufficient? And if not, how do you recommend pinning into slate?

Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated.

I've never specifically done slate, but for all my bases, I pin the model. Usually one foot is sufficient for infantry, however I'd do two if possible for larger models e.g a troll. When I'm finished painting the model and the base, I put a dab of white paint on the end of the pin, to mark where I want to drill in the base. Then I simply drill the hole, and push the pin into it with a bit of superglue to make it extra sturdy

Will regular drills drill into slate effectively?

A masonry bit will go right through but it will be difficult to find one small enough to pin models.You could fill the hole with green stuff and push the pin into the green stuff.

When people drill into the feet go models, what do they use? Dremel? hand drill?
And metal models?

I first use a hobby knife (like a Stanley knife) to mark the spot, then use a hobby drill. You have to be very careful though not to drill too fast, otherwise you could end up going through the model very easily

I use a pin punch,a small nail will do, to mark the spot. A pin vice or small hand drill will work. I use a drill press but that is because of my arthritis. Any power drill will also work.

I find a pin vice is more precise for me and you have better control.

I think it may be time for me to get a pin vice. I find a dremel melts the plastic and makes too big a hole.

Use a slower speed. But get a pin vice. I repaired some old lead models last night. I forgot how simple it was to drill them with a pin vice. I did not have to use the pin punch like I would have with tin. The dremel will also melt lead.
