Painting realistic rocks and stones

So I've started work on a rocky outcrop to battle over in my games, but I'm stumped on how to paint real looking rocks.

I've previously painted rocks, with drybrushes and washes, but these don't seem to get that realistic affect. Not when I do it anyway.

I'm sure we all love realism in our hobby, so surely you know what I mean. I can't get the desired texture on my rocks usually, or cohesively. Of course, these rocks I'm making are rather large and would look good and benefit from a realistic paint job.

Blabbed on, but anyway. Has anyone got any tutorials/techniques of how to paint realistic looking rocks?

If you check out woodland scenic's YouTube channel you can get some good tips. I've painted up some cliff faces with their techniques and they look very good

I just start from black and dry brush dark grey, then grey, then light grey etc. using a lighter drybrush with each colour. To make it more realistic add brown to the greys or add a dry brush of brown and maybe a dry brush of an earthy green. A wash of brown or green could be effective as well.

It's not the best photo but my way is similar to others. It's about building the greys and browns to give an effective look. Apologies for the old colour scheme.
From a black basecoat a series of drybrushes
Shadow grey - snakebite leather - codex grey - graveyard earth - fortress grey - bleached bone - now a very thin Catachan green wash - final drybrushing - fortress grey - skull white.
I've recently switched to vallego paints and have found a thin olive green makes an excellent moss effect.
