Gorgeous! Now think carefully about a themed terrain covering, such as where people would walk so the groundcover would be sparse, what time of year you are representing and so on. Best of luck and keep the nice images coming!

A bit of digression from the "hall project", but I thought it wouldn't hurt to post it anyway: two minis I just completed to paint for a lovely person.

Let me know what you think about them :)

Very good, like the Gandalf figure, hard one to paint.

Both look nice, Gandalf is the stand out but that could be because he's white. Good transition with the shading and I like the subtle difference in colour between Gandalf and shadow fax.
Eomer is a tricky one to comment on as there is almost too much detail on this figure that it can become lost. It looks great and I love the dappled horse. I would say you can go lighter with the highest dapple across the upper leg area.

They both look great!
I agree Gandalf stands out, mainly because of the colour.
White is tricky to paint and you did it beautifully.

It's always encouraging to read such nice comments! :) Especially after painting tricky minis like the White Wizard. Getting the transitions and nuances to look good was a real pain... But obviously worth it in the end if I look at your comments ;)

Great effort- Shadowfax in particular looks super. Now, what about that amazing Rohan hall!

So, another little "side project" that I almost finished (in fact only basing left to do, I guess). My Erkenbrand on foot and Grimbold of Grimslade:

And @mertaal: don't worry, I haven't forgot about my hall! ;) It's just harder than expected to get my hands on teddy fur for the thatching.. I have no teddy left to slay here and I just can't find the right one on ebay..
Nevertheless, here's a little update of the base:

Do you guys think, I should go lighter with the rocks, or add even more variation (some are more brownish than grey..) or more defined edges?

Looking forward to reading your opinions! :)

Rocks are looking good, try adding a green wash to give a some weathering

Definitely need some green to replicate moss, I would also go a bit lighter on the edges to create some definition.
The whole thing looks great and has a very fitting look for Rohan, that grubby sort of rustic appearance.
I think a few grass tufts will also work. Once glued apply some paint to them to set the colour you wish.

Looking great!

You could drybrush the gravel with a light brown to give it more depth.
Another light grey drybrush on the stones will look good as well I think.

The gate looks very realistic as it is now! Congrats!

I presume grass will be added later on and you're only worrying about the paintjob so far ^^
Looks realistic so far, would love to have this on my gaming board!

Looks good. not quite enough contrast at the moment though, so adding some tinge to the rocks. maybe the wall and central part of the path too would be good.

Really like the way this is coming along!

Personally I don't like the "teddy bear fur" look. I've seen people achieve better results with cut up towel.

This is a good overview of lots of methods:
http://www.hourofwolves.org/?view=articles&which=thatch

And this is a great Japanese project using towelling:
http://muraminiatures.com/aking-a-28mm- ... -roof.html

buuuuut the type and alignment of the towel is important. (Sorry to the author if you ever see this but) here's a not so great job, providing a useful lesson in what to avoid:

:D.

Thanks for the comments guys (why is there not a single word about Erkenbrand or Grimbold though? :/ )

Static grass of course will be added to the halls' base when the painiting ist finished. The green washing is a good idea though, will do that on some parts.

@Delirivm: actually I hadn't even started paintig the gate yet, it's just a side effect of drybrushing the stones and the earth. I planned to go a bit lighter on the wood :)

@mertaal: thanks for the useful tips and the overview! It's nice to see the different techniques compared to each other. As I had worked with fur before, I wanted to stay with it, (I also plan improving my previous results at a later point: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=24873&p=307231&hilit=rohan+buildings#p307231 )
I also think, that the thatched roofs may have that kind of fur look, that is critized in the article..
Image
I guess I'll sleep a night over that decision :)

To answer for you, Grimbold and Erkenbrand could be some of your best painting. Very nice cloak work that has been highlighted well with that added touch of a realistic freehand trim.
The white underskirt doesn't work for me, but that is a personal choice. I would have gone for a brown with some yellow in it.

Everything looks great. The models are well painted, clean details, cloth looks very rich. Any rohan stable boy would be proud to one day don armor looking like that.

As for thatched roofs, I read Mertaals suggested articles too, many of those examples are still very good for a table top display and comes down to how much time you want to spend and how easy you can get the materials. I use fur myself, it has been a while but I think I gave my fur a hair cut because if it is too long it can have the fur effect, though it is one person's very strict take on what thatch should look like. Obviously thatch from house to house and culture to culture will be different lengths, may have been repaired several times over years, may have fallen into disrepair over the years, and may be a poor job from an unskilled peasant. So I think towel (of which there are many thread types/lengths as well, shag, plush, beach, shop) or fur are just fine if it lays down well when glued. The foundation looks awesome so far, so I think you are on the road to a great piece.

I'm seriously impressed by the contrast you managed between Erkenbrand's armour and his white robe. I find silver and white a very difficult combo, but you manage to make the colours really leap out! :yay:

I was looking forward to see the progress on your house and because of that I forgot to comment on your models.

They look great!
Erkenbrand looks bright and grim at the same time, you seem to have picked out every detail, great work.
Grimbold is well painted as well but Erkenbrand stands out more, probably because of the sculpt and colours.
Though the inside of his cloak is really nice, is the fur sculpted on the original model or did you add it?

And oh, I really thought the gate was finished!
It looks great already from what I can tell on the pics.
So I look forward to see the final product!
