I just painted up an Otherworld Troll Mini. I don't have plans for it, I just liked the figure.

Great miniatures.

That'd make a cool Grendel, as in Beowulf & Grendel.

In fact it'd make a cool unique monster in LOTR, like Gulavhar.

These miniatures would be fantastic for D&D.

I like that female ranger. Not over - the - top battlefield impractical lol

And as for that troll. I really like it! Idk what if field it as (beyond a cave troll profile) but it's cool!

A souped up version of Gollum perhaps? Like a LOTR version of Grendel, a twisted monster who dwells in caves. Maybe its a half-troll monster, rejected by all and so it dwells alone in the mountains.

I'd use a Gollum profile, with the back stabber and cave dweller rules etc, but increase the Fight, Defence, Strength, Attacks and Wounds to be appropriate for a monster of that size.

It would make for a great narrative scenario based in the wilds of Eriador. The Trollshaws maybe, or the Misty Mountains. Theres a scenario in the Ruin of Arnor sourcebook, in which Aragorn and a band of rangers venture into Fornost to hunt down Gûlavhar the terror of Arnor. Maybe you could do a similar scenario in which a different band of rangers, perhaps led by Halbarad or Arathorn, venture into the Trollshaws or the Misty Mountains to hunt down a Grendel like monster.

Screw it, I'm going to order a couple of those rangers and maybe a monster. Will be interesting to see how the scale compares with LOTR. It'll be be good to have a female ranger of the north character, add some variety to my Arnor force. There was a female Dunedain in Born of Hope who joins Arathorn and his men.

The Troll reminds me of a Forgotten Realms troll where they are plant based and regenerate any wounds that are not fire based (or magic based). This of course lead to trolls with two heads or extra limbs when libs were hacked in half and both repaired themselves. I think in this way the green is also appropriate for the scheme as they are often found in swamps.

I actually don't like the Tolkien troll ecology because of it's turn to stone in sunlight, it just makes them weak and useless to any evil power. I would have better liked the idea of shunning or hating sunlight but at least able to manage it for travel to war or new digs. Other Fantasy worlds have definitely taken this disadvantage away and made Trolls more fearsome. I don't know any D&D party that wants to fight a group of Trolls on an outing. LOTR SBG they are a joke and non threat.

This would be a D&D troll. I think the entire Otherworld range is based off classic D&D monsters.

King Ondoher, thanks for the idea. Since I just finished some Dunedain I might whip up a mini troll hunt campaign.

Regarding D&D and other RPG games...how common is the use of miniatures in RPG games?

The only RPG games I've seen being played at my local club were strictly pen & paper. Not that I think theres anything wrong with that of course, but having grown up with miniature wargaming, a miniature RPG would be my preference.

I don't play D&D, but I do like to watch the Acquisitions Incorporated podcasts and live PAX games. They sometimes use miniatures and really cool, elaborate dungeon dioramas. I'd love to play a miniature RPG on a 3D gaming board, it'd be the perfect merger of my miniature wargaming hobby and my RPG hobby (I love playing RPG video games like Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age).

Otherworld Miniatures do many many of the "original concept" monsters for D&D.
My buddy bought a lot off this guy. I believe he's a one man show there.
Works out of his garage. He offers extras to dedicated buyers.
Great models, and from what I understand great service.
Very dedicated following he has there at Otherworld!

Our Miniatures

Our figures are sculpted in a variety of media, moulded and cast in pewter or resin, and packaged in attractive blister packs and boxes. We describe our miniatures as 28mm, meaning that an average-sized human would stand at around 28mm tall. However, not many of our figures are average-sized humans! For monsters, we use a scale of 5mm on the model to represent 1 foot of height. So a 10 foot tall Ogre would be represented by a 50mm tall miniature. Most of our figures are modelled with ‘slotta-tabs’ and supplied with appropriate plastic bases.

For it to be Grendel-like, it would have to have a very strong profile.
For the matter of weak tolkien trolls, I personally say only cave trolls become stoned(pun intended).

As for D&D with mini's it depends on the group. I have played both ways, some people need the visual assist, so either I draw a lot or show pictures or use mini's. Other people are role players and acting the parts and can picture monsters with no assist.
I like to have the mini's for games though, and using hero quest style formats can help get a party going through a game.

I have always liked representational miniatures for RPG's.
When playing it helped our party better visualize where they are.

Oh I've seen your scenery. The guys at Wizards of the Coast should ring you up and rent one of your gaming boards for the Celebrity D&D games that Chris Perkins runs at PAX.

I buy minis with the intent of using them for rpg's first and lotr sbg, second. If you play an rpg with me, there will be minis. Guaranteed. I have hundreds of minis and spent hundreds of hours painting them. The last thing i'm going to do is let them collect dust because my group thinks using minis is dumb. Minis are cool, like bowties.
