Hi!

It's an interesting thread about sizes and scales, I'd like to say something about it.

First:
I stopped collecting GW miniatures mostly because of the differences of scale, size and quality.

For a Tolkien fan the movie version of Smaug is rather disappointing. So I don't calculate with these fans.

I would rather loved to see this:

...and for those who want to calculate the size of the movie Smaug without taking care of perspective, here are some reference:

Let's not generalise: For some Tolkien fans the movie version of Smaug is disappointing.

I'm a huge Tolkien fan and I loved the movie Smaug.

Each to their own and all that.

scale is why people keep being negative nancy's around here.
So I was not using perspective to not care about scale, I was showing a perspective shot to show what you can live with in a model and still be happy enough since it will be the largest thing on ay LOTR or Hobbit SBG battle field. And so I worded it to mean can you live with that?

Personally I would rather be positive at what can be done than to sit back and shoot holes in everyone's hope. Especially from someone who admits they don't buy from GW anymore ad doesn't care if they make one or not. I do care if they make it and this game, so I will continue to say that Scale thrown out the window and let us never talk about it again, can GW make a model that we can be happy with. I am not sure Tolkien had scale shots in his book either so it really is up to the perspective of the person buying it weather it will be suitable or not.

Since I don't have a hobbit jet to use for scale of models. I will use the photo's used above.;

it is not perfect to scale doing this, but again would fit on a 12" base. So the question is would people be able to live with it? I know I could.

You should learn the difference between perspective and axonometry. You can't measure like this.

As I said. Throw scale out the window. Can you live with a dragon this size for the game which GW could make and it will be the largest Hobbit/LOTR model ever made. There will be no doubt that it is huge. there will be no doubt that it is smaug. And who care what Peter Jackson thinks the dragon size should be (seeing how he can't even decide what the movie is about yet) as it will still be a huge dragon and great version for miniature gaming.

And you still don't have to buy it if they make it, isn't that great? I just think it is possible and what all of you are suggesting is that it is not possible and we should forget the whole thing. I for one will not forget it, I want my smaug model and too mee his head looks like scale 2" with models (or Bilbo) and so he can fit on the base I suggested even if scaled down a bit and has his wings and tail folded in to keep him a bit tighter.

Maybe tonight I will make a tin foil and cardboard version at the scale I am talking about and put it next to Bilbo and we can argue how it is not in scale while at the same time possibly accept the scale as pretty dang close enough and better than a big fat "no" from everyone.

sure you can! It just won't be to scale. :)

Let's get down to flying low and frying chickens in the barnyard.

My point was The dragon would end up about this size. I think the scale issue is a red herring. It is far more likely that PJ's changes mucked up GW's plan.

I read in "Smaug - Unleashing the Dragon" you could fit 2 747 Jumbo jets under each wing!!!!

the picture of smaug with the two jets which I think was being leaked before the film came out looks larger than the dragon they show in the film. I know Peter has been changing things on the fly in his edit chair so perhaps it was an early concept of size but when putting the dragon in a confined dwarven treasury it may have been to large to deal with and maybe he was scaled back.
I know he is big and that as people have mentioned, perspective shots and long shots and other film trickery make it difficult to pinpoint a scale reference and the only other object other than gold is a hobbit who is also filmed throughout in perspective to look smaller than those around him.... so it is all a scale mess.

The good think about being in Plastic injection molding is that I know how molds work, laminar flow, and of course price on plastic. The fact that GW can make the realm of battle boards at 2 feet square is a great sign that they can make pretty large molds and large parts. It is leaning strongly toward the 'very easy for them to make' side of things, even if he was 4 feet long multipart plastic, it is still not difficult from a manufacturing point of view (sales however is another story).

A year ago I would have made an argument about potential sales. At this point I agree. Too late I am afraid.

I really hope it will indeed be Bard shooting the dragon down with his bow - and not using one of those ballistas. Using that 'black arrow' bolt, sure, but only using his bow.

And I still can't like that name. 'The Battle of the Five Armies'.. meh.

I'm with you on this Charlie, that and they simply haven't decided on the pose.

I’m hoping Bard will shoot Smaug with a bow. I remember seeing an interview with the actor who spoke about firing his bow with his hand the wrong way due to the length of the arrow, so I’m hopeful.

A ballista bolt on a bow... Strangely enough it would work right into this film trilogy of silly over the top action.

That's a nice poster by the way, but wouldn't judge scale using that. That's like saying Orthanc and Baradur are practically neighbours judging by The Two Towers poster.

The poster looks great.

I threw this drawing together. I am not saying this is accurate, but just a possible size to make the model.

like it or not, if they do make smaug, he will most likely be half this size. I just don't think they would do this size, it is big and we don't need it that big to represent the model for the game.

I do think since I have plenty of time to learn more sculpting, maybe I will start this scale smaug for a project myself.

I agree that scale is not an issue, they will simply make the best version that they can.

To add to scale comparisons see the link below for the first Lego set announced for the new film.

Well, the bigger emphasis on Smaug for this poster (Desolation's usually showed a bunch of Elves) does make it more likely that he will be released for the 3rd movie (not that many Hobbit releases can be expected from GW in the next months anyway, but still).

As for the scale (which is probably hardly consistent in the movies to begin with), they should just do what they've done before, the same thing FFG did with the Tantive IV for X-Wing: make it smaller than it should actually be, but make it absolutely massive compared to normal things. Whether that will be done, we'll probably know in some 6 months...
